Title: LCD monitors
Post by: theolodian on 24 October 2006, 10:22:18
Looks like I'm going to PC World after lunch for a new monitor.  They're pretty similar, right?  According to their website they stock a Packard Bell 19" widescreen with digital input for 179.  All the other specs are typical for the price.  The digital input is worth the extra 40 quid over same monitor without?  Cheers.

If your video card has a DVI output then it's probably worth it. You get a better quality picture, all be it extremely marginal.

A DVI output is the bigger plug (white coloured) on the graphics card with the square pins.

Looks like this (http://pecv.free.fr/DVI%20Ecran.JPG)

check the response time, are you into your games or films?

You want a maxium responce rate of 8ms, mine is 4ms (cause i like my games)

PC World are expensive for the smaller items, screens ect...

I highly recommend ebuyer for screens and any other bits:

http://www.ebuyer.com

I bought a 19" TFT Samsung off there with 4ms responce with DVi input for £190

I also highly recommend Samsung!! They have a 3 year warrenty, if you get just ONE dead or hot pixel they will swap it out for another one no problems!

Remember some monitors or companys will not swap it out unless there are 4 or 5 dead pixels!  :o

I might be wrong and you're probably covered it any way but make sure its not an internet order only price

I'd actually recommend ebuyer for any and everything computer related. You won't find cheaper anywhere.

Check the warranty - it should be (a) three years, (b) free collect and return, and (c) a straight swap-with-new policy - i.e. they drop a new unit and collect the faulty one.

Cheers guys.  Didn't get anyhting at PC World b/c 1) only 12 month warranty, and 2) they're a bunch of idiots.  Took him 20 mins to find the price and warranty term.  He never came back from going to see if there were any in stock.  Useless!

I am looking at the Sony SDM E96D, their new 19" 4x3 with DVI. eBuyer has it for 180 on next day delivery.  Warranty is 3yrs, but with Sony and not a full replacement warranty.  Maybe I'll go down to the Sony store and see what the deal is.

I coulda told you that... Guess I should have really  ::)

They're overpriced, inexperienced and really don't have much of a clue about customer support. I've been to my local PC world a few times to get some odd bits and bobs, like cables etc. and been disgusted at the lack of knowledge and prices each time. Don't know why I keep going back in there. I guess I just like looking at gadgets  ;D

I mean, £15 for a 5m extension cable is a bit steep, no matter what cabling it is!

Good choice, i buy all my stuff from them. Very very good.

Also check out scan.co.uk they are good these days, ordered a 4 port USB KVM arrived next day on standard delivery, they also sent a text message to my phone with the tracking number for InitialCity link at no extra cost!  :)

I'd still have to say Samsung, Sony screens are very, very good. But a dead pixel would pi$$ me off so much.... so thats why i went for Samsung in the end...

I always use eclipse (http://www.eclipse-computers.com/), but then they're just down the road from me so I don't have to pay postage  :y

Eclipse and Scan do not have warranty info.

My first laptop had 3 dead pixels.  That was 'acceptable' 10 years ago  :-?

Really happy with Samsung LCD TV, except not very useful as a TV monitor.   ::)

I think that I found the same one Tunnie was talking about.  I do like Samsung, but I would prefer a 4x3 with height adjustment, 3yr warranty, and DVI.  Looks like 200 quid to get one.  Since it looks like I may also need to get a laptop soon, and those are 400-700, I guess I am going to have to wait.  My 10 quid pawn shop CRT is going to have to soldier on  :-[

TheBoy is probably upset about the faulty leds on the screen... this used to be quite common a few years ago, but is rare nowadays.

Anyway if he really wanted to teach Sony a lesson for not replacing his screen with the faulty LEDs, he should have told them that the screen is dead... and then make sure that it actually was!  ;D

Yes you can. Sony are crap. All their products are overpriced, poorly constructed, their customer service is terrible, they HATE europe/europeans/uk, and i dont even like their design. They're just a fashionable technobrand.

That said, i got dad to buy a sony stereo for his omega  ;D

My video card is playing up - just spent 80 or so on a new one :o

And £60 on a 100 GB lap top drive for my PVR (50 hours)
