Go for it mate, I tried stopping a few times, unsuccesfully, until one time I woke up, mouth tasted like sh*t, and I thought "that's it, no more", and I stuck to it. Been 30 years since. Its a handy drug, but you got to consider is it worth the hit now ?, or being around when your daughter gets married and has kids etc.
I fancy living as long as I can, lots of things in life still to enjoy doing, and smoking will stop me from doing that.

2 reasons to stop smoking.

1.   3 yrs ago my mum had hip replacement, should of been out in 2 days. as she smoked for over 50  yrs, she is 73. she was in hosp for 2 weeks, her body couldnt manage without the nicotine and made her very ill. she has been told if she ever stops it could kill her.

2.   last yr my dad was made to stop for 6 months or hosp wouldnt give him his double hernia op, he is 78. he has been smoking for 60 yrs. he said he never felt so ill when he stopped. but is now after 6 months starting to feel clean, more active and generally a lot healthier than he has felt for yrs.

my kids hassle me to pack up. i stopped for 13 weeks but the stress i was under at the time just made me start again.

over a couple of years i lost both of my parents to smoking related deseases, Dad had a heart attack and mum died of cancer.

I use to smoke about 30 a day, gave up 8 years ago and haven't looked back, im not one of these reformed smokers who lectures others about the risk and possibilities, anyone who smokes knows full well the damage they are doing.
Likewise i know how bloody difficult it is to give up, the first few months are the hardest, stick at it  :y

I wish i could give up.

I have quit on and off for years, the hubby smokes too which doesnt help matters. he says he wants to quit but after 2 days he folds.

I have so much stress going on at the mo :( i really dont think i could do it right now. :'( :'(

i will do it but its finding the right time! i know it sounds like a cop out but i will quit soon. last time i quit i noticed the difference in days it was great i would wake before my alarm clock went off ready for the day where as at the mo i lie in bed hitting the soonze button!

it doesn't sound like a cop out to me . Mrs Zippo stopped 3 years ago i said i would stop as well when i was ready ,and last Friday i was ready.

i used to smoke anywhere between 20 and 40 a day. gave up through sheer determination and willpower but events a couple of years later drove me back to the dreaded weed. after a year / few months of smoking again i went to see a hypnotherapist.

£45, one session. havent smoked since. dont miss it at all. forget all that paul mckenna stuff. hypnotherapy is a fantastic way of quitting instantly and you immediately see the financial and health rewards. pays for itself in a few days.

been a few years now. have no intention of going back. recommended the hypnotherapist to a few friends, all quit instantly. brilliant.

its not something i think I'd want to try , Paul McKenna put me right off

nah paul mckenna is full on hypnosis. hypnotherapy isnt like that at all. its really just putting you in a bit of a trance, like when youre daydreaming. mckenna is full hypnosis and therefore a loss of willpower. with hypnotherapy you are conscious the whole time and able to get up and walk away at any stage.

when youre in that 'daydreaming' state your subconscious is more susceptible to 'positive reinforcement' ie. ramming it home that you really dont want to smoke anymore. of course you have to want to give up in the first place or it wont work, its reinforcement and hypnotherapy alone is not necessarily enough; you have to want to quit in the first place.

your hypnotherapist should be a properly qualified and registered practitioner.

i couldnt recommend it enough. 5 of my friends have since been and all quit for good. usually only needs 1 session but occasionally a second for more reinforcement.

i paid £45 for a session and this is about right. another friend paid £200 in london. she was ripped off. it still worked though!

one of my friends had read this book and given up before she went to see the hypnotherapist. on her recommendation i started to read it but found it so mind numbing that i didnt get round to finishing it. as it's about reinforcement and bombarding you with the same message over and over again until it sinks in it's pretty boring and repetitive. that said, it works for a lot of people and i'm in no way dismissing it.

one of the best things about giving up using hypnotherapy is the lack of any withdrawal symptoms because you're technically 'not giving anything up'.

allen carr himself died of lung cancer a couple of years ago, the result of a 100 a day habit for 30 years. i don't know where it is possible to find the time to smoke 100 fags a day!

He quit in the 1980s, it was probably the thousands of sessions of helping other people to quit that brought on the cancer.

They have courses all over the world; about £200 and, if you don't quit, you get your money back.

I gave up the fags when the chancellor of the time put them up to £1.75 for 20.

I did not realise the damage I had already done untill I had a heart attack in 2001.

I subsequently had angioplasty and stents inserted to keep my clogged up arteries open and keep me alive.

When you are lying awake on a hospital operating table with a doctor feeding a catheter in to an artery through a hole in your groin it brings things in to perspective.

When the x-ray monitor they use to see where to guide this catheter to is in your line of site and you can see what you have done to your arteries through smoking and they have to use a catheter with a special head to bore out your arteries and remove the crap before they can insert the stent to hold your artery open it frightens the life out of you.

Don't use excuses and cop outs for not stopping smoking it almost killed me and I have seen the evidence.

If you respect yourself and your life quit now.

It is not easy but it can be done.

If you have given up stick with it it gets easier in time.

It is only your life we are talking about.

Good Luck

The latest Nanny State idea is for ciggies to be removed from display & sold 'under the counter' nudge nudge wink wink  >:(

why not? - if you smoke already you can get smokes on prescription - otherwise you can't buy them - nobody will start then ::)

I, too, am an ex-smoker. But you're more than welcome to come & smoke in my house or stand next to/near me & smoke. It just doesn't bother.
You can't smoke in my car though :y  :y

not aimed at you Andy - but i know too well how irritating ex-smokers can be ;D non-smokers are worse though; "why don't you just give up it can't be that hard?" they have NO idea ::)

my in laws are former smokers , you cant smoke any where near them Garden ,House,Car etc they even tried to make me smoke outside my own house when they came to visit .Yeah right ( they stopped to save the cash not for their health  by the way ) The way that i look at it is that Ive decided to stop ,nobody else just me ,i couldn't ask people not to smoke near me because Ive stopped .That's being a bit two faced just my own thoughts
