I have had Infinity since May last year and it has never failed.
Letter has arrived from BT saying they want to swap out my current Openreach modem for a new one which will improve the connection. Ain't broke don't fix it comes to mind. Maybe I will wait a while and check on the Digitalspy forum for feedback from others.
-
There is a known issue with the modems they were fitting that a firmware upgrade was unable to resolve.
I've not heard any issues suffered by anyone after Kelly have replaced the vDSL modem.
-
The new ones still run hot though ;D
-
Yes the letter says to expect a call from Kelly. I think I have had less problems because the modem has been wall mounted and is in a nice clear space with good air circulation.
Will go with the change then probably.

This area is considered not economically viable for fibre. Despite being only 1km from the rather exchange and that most of the area around the town where I live is fibre-enabled.... >:(
It shows you what BT think of the Armed Forces >:(

Just had a issue with Orange, used to get 7 meg but dropped to 0.50kbps,send a new bright box, that improved nothing. It took 3 weeks before BT, got involved their fault because of an upgrade at their exchange.
Now back up at 5.5 meg.
I was offered 3 months free, from orange which amounts to £84.

I have infinity....running at 34 meg...I am very close to the exchange. The modem was changed about a month or so ago....never had any problems before or after.
The original engineer did say that the original modem wanted plenty of air as they run hot, but I never had a problem. :y
If the new one runs hot, why did they change ?????
-
Your right there, they do run hot it discoloured the pvc window sill, the new one is warm and is suppose to be 5 times faster.
Alfie.

do you mean that you have recently had your original BT Infinity modem changed? The replacement modems should not give speed gain to those of us already on 30 meg or so. I live 3 miles from the exchange by the way so Infinity is an effective system.

BT is a commercial company, and will only put in the invetsment if the returns work. I suspect the people working out the ROI have no idea if its a military town or a Clacton-on-Sea style old biddies town. Even if they did, I doubt it would make a difference.
Added to the fact that the demand would not warrant the investment, there may be other issues around permissions for the DSLAM cabinets and running the fibres, and all the associated new footway boxes required.

Maybe not enough customers to make it financially viable Matt, or a permissions issue for digging up Military Town to lay the fibre to the cab.
EDIT:
TB beat me to it.

I have spoken to the dept in the HQ who would give the permission and it's pretty straight forward. As for demand, there's a lot of it here as home range from 1-2.3Mb with most below 2Mb. I know many who ordered BT Vision only for it not to work due to poor connection speed. BT are aware of this.

how many subs on the exchange (try sam knows).
also, what is the churn, as obviously its a massive investment, and the setup fee (if charged) does cover the install work for that sub, let alone the infrastructure work.

I hate BT with a passion and cant wait to leave in may, the customer service is the worse ive ever experienced from any company, my net keeps slowing right down and i have to reset the home hub atleast once a day. after 5 calls all taking atleast 30 mins they finaly sent a new v3 hub, I still have to keep resetting the stupid thing, not only that they told me when i was going to leave last time they could give me a good deal, total lies! said i never go over a certain amount and would get phoned or emailed if i did before any charges, yet even after admitting they hadnt contacted me wouldnt take off the extra £25 charges for going over, and this for a crap 4mg connection! Every 6 months i have to go through some shit with bt :( :(
But what always makes me laugh is the 15 times they have updated my address, and each time say sorry and its now done........ (they managed to get the bills here but cant get the engineers or equiptment lol )

That was always going to be a problem once OFCOM (the most ineffectual buch of retards ever put upon this earth) insisted BT had to be split to virtual seperate companies, which means that one half isn't allowed to use the other half's customer databases directly, and have to go through layered interfaces, adding more chance for all customers (not just BT Retail - the part you assume are "BT") to get poor service. But thats OFCOM.
