Title: Sun roof frame paint ...
Post by: SIR Philbutt on 03 March 2012, 15:38:37
The black paint on the sunroof frame (external) has bubbled and come away in some places leaving the white underneath showing

Anyone found a good way to fix this and which paint to use. I have some smooth hammerite in black already.

Ta Phil

I was just thinking about this too. I need a panel sprayed and was going to ask the body shop what they thought about it when I was there. Need to be careful with the cushioned edging, but don't see why hammerite wouldn't suffice? Not sure anyone had tried it, but we'll soon find out ......

whatever paint you use, a primary coat must be applied to stick to the metal surface..

I really admire your Omega dedication on this issue. Mine bubbled after 2 years - in 2003 and they fitted another which bubbled within 2 years as well - just left it and it has not really got any worse.

Mine is the same, it looks like a plastic frame to me, I could be wrong.

I'm going to remove mine, with the help of Marks guide, (see maintenance guides) when the weather gets better.

if it was plastic , it wouldnt stay under our sun for long years imo.. I have stone chip on it which seems like its metal..

although mine faded in color still no bubbling.. anyway either plastic or metal you cant paint directly with one layer.. or it will bubble up as seen in examples..

Until I remove it, as I said, I'm not sure what material it is.

I'm sure someone on here will enlighten us ;)

Im pretty sure its alloy. :-\

The frame is indeed alloy.

The panel is a doodle to remove following the guide on here.  5 minute job.

Unfortunately, the painted frame is bonded to the glass, so it's impossible to remove it completely.  This makes it very difficult to rub down without catching a marking the glass.  I speak from experience here, as that is exactly what I did to mine.  I've since sourced another complete panel, and I shall be tackling it again soon.

masking with thicker material can protect from sanding scratches.. and some patience.. (remember I sanded a whole car ;D )

Re. Hammerite ... IIRC from my kit car build (where I used it extensively) it takes a very long time to fully harden (weeks!) Not really suitable for this job :-\

Mine has bubbled too, I will be using primer, followed by a black paint with a semi-sheen, OR matt, then polish.

use etch primer on alloy frame-remove old paint first though-could react.

Red Oxide is my favourite, good enough for the Forth bridge.

:y I used an aerosol of black Smoothrite (Hammerite with a smooth finish) one. A good rub down with fine wire wool first and then a good cleaning off was the only preparation needed. With Hammerite or Smoothrite you do not need a primer, they are self priming.
Hammerite or Smoothrite both need a special thinners and nothing else will do.
Best of all....Hammerite or Smoothrite will NOT react if put on top of any other paint type.
The shine is fantastic too!  :y

Nice one .. when would you like to do mine ??   :)

Wore my thumb down rubbing all the loose paint off, over 50% came off, then another hour (with glove on) getting rid of the "lumpy" oxidation.

Will take at least a month for my thumb to heal.  :o ::)
