Title: Astra Z16SE EGR problem
Post by: TheBoy on 04 March 2012, 17:22:16
EGR faults stored. EGR already blanked.

I should point out, it has an automatic gearbox.

As it's blanked, none, other than EML

Is the cable connection secure ??? As it's blanked, if the ECU raises a fault its either disconnected or has developed an "internal" fault ???

Purely guessing here .... :(

Accept we need to either disable egr via software, or replace/clean it.

Forgot everything else ;)

perhaps i can wander over with it when you have free time , and see if anything is revealed checking live data?     ???

i can get an other egr i suppose,   but i kind of thought that missed the  point of blanking it off and trying to disable it in ECU  ::)

All the info I can find revolves around a software update to disable it. However, it appears the fix was only implemented into the MANUAL version of the engine ECU, not the AUTO version. Grrrr.  So, although you have the latest software, it doesn't have the fix (fix being disable the EGR completely).

The original fault is caused by sooty deposits causing the valve to stick.  Blanking off cures the lumpiness around idle/low revs, but the valve still sticks, and the feedback circuit obviously allows the ECU to see this. Or thats my understanding anyway.

Given this, wonder if its worth you popping to that chavvy shop for pikeys, Wilkinsons, as their cheap paint stripper seems OK at cleaning EGRs. If you have a stiff brush to aggitate it in as well...

I take It the egr circuit can't be fiddled to loop the egr out of it all together! Brake pad sensor style?

Anything is possible, but reckon it won't be that simple...

Can you remember what you did in TIS when doing this update?  took me a bit to get one sorted.

Is it an EGR fault code again?

As I would expect the light to have come on as soon as the engine was warmed up.

Not seen car again, so was trying to be forewarned.

When doing the engine ecu software update? There seemed to be no selectable options.  As said, this one is an automatic.

yes...mine asked for old or new cylinder head...

select old, and just let an update occur.

select new, the version was a lower number, but different, and the comments box said solves egr issue, ir words to that effect.

may have been a slightly different engine...what year was this one?

TB - I know you know your stuff so this might not help but my dads astra g 1.6 auto used to cut out/stall. We fitted an extra earthing point one in the relay area in the engine and 3 years on it has never troubled us since.

I think the syptoms are cured (MaxV6?), but EML still coming on. Ideally need to check codes again.

generally been reliable running ,  i think it's stalled twice since we bought it,  both times, it'd just been started and she was just about to maneuver , it's never cut out....  to be honest,  i've been somewhat surprised,  remembering how much hassle i got off an EGR on one of my elites....

let me know when's good for you Jaime,  and i'll pop over and see what the codes say...

(assuming i can prise it off the girly.....    she loves being independent and buggering off to see her friends for the weekend without bothering to tell us....  )

MaxV6 - as its currently reliable enough, can it wait a fortnight or so, as I'm pretty tied up?

I feel a plan forming, involving popping over your way one Saturday afternoon, as my mate wants to buy you a pint.  He is very happy with how you transformed it.

just one thing, we're moving house, sometime mid-late april.....      assuming the offer i just put in is accepted......       new place , if we get it,  is over by marston/headington  and has a driveway long enough to put a whole pile of omegas on it !!!!   not to mention  2 garages, .......   :D
