Title: Land Rover Clonk - Wheel bearing? - Joy :(
Post by: JamesV6CDX on 29 March 2008, 16:59:30
I've just posted this on a Landie forum, but thought I'd see if anyone here had any comments?

"I have been noticing a "clonk" over bumps in my 95 Disco and also when cornering at low speeds.

I've just raised the front of the Disco in the air, and checked all the components I can see for excess play. (I'm no expert with these)

I can't see any play in anything underneith, I rocked the drivers side wheel in all the positions, and it's dead firm.

But when I rocked the passenger side wheel in the same manner, I was somewhat frightened by the amount of play I found in it!

When you rock the wheel, there is a lot of movement, followed by a "knock knock" sound....

Is this likely to be a wheel bearing, or something else?

Please advise

What sort of a job is it to do, on these? I'm reasonably competent with engines (I'm experienced with Vauxhalls) but know VERY little about 4x4...

Also, what do the bearings cost?

Cheers in anticipation!

James"

Oh just to add, when I get Maria to hold the brake pedal on, I cannot feel the play - is this still indicative of a wheel bearing?

Oh, and RAVE (simelar to TIS) doesn't seem to help much!

I would try to pack it with grease to start with and see how it is after a week or so.

have had simular on one of my cars before and the bearing needed grease it was bone dry. worked for me.

Seem to recall they are a taper roller bearing so it needs stripping, inspecting, re-packing with grease and then nipping up until there is no play.

Hope you have some BIG sockets  :y

going by the amount of play and that clonk noise, it's unsafe / Fubar..

Thankfully I think my Disco is just about old enough not to need the entire hub replacing - I should get away with just the bearing!

Plus, no point taking the half shaft and hub etc out etc to grease it up, and refit the old bearing ;)

Apparently a 52mm(!) box spanner is needed.

Surely if I am stripping anyhow, I should just change the bearing? They are only a tenner...

Classic symptoms of a loose or knackered taper roller bearing. Follow Marks DTM Calib advice above.

Note BIG sockets need BIG bars!!

Never done one... I'll set aside a day but once I've done one, I suspect I'll have it down to a couple to three hours...

I am never confident when I do a job for the first time.. but after that it's usually plain sailing :y

Changing the bearing is easy, changing the race can be challenging.....and I bet its the race that is buggered.

Need to strip it down to see as its a deffo MOT failure.

I suppose if I get the hub off then I could take it into a garage etc with all the kit to just change the race for me? Or can I get something myself that would help me do it.

I don't like relying on garages, tbh..

On a later landrover (1998 on) you need to replace the whole hub, it's a sealed unit.

On mine, the bearing is seperate, so you can change just the bearing.

The difference? Mine is about £190 cheaper ;)

Hopefully it will be the wheel bearing and not the swivel hubs which are also prone to wear. The nut for the wheel bearing isn't that tight and most Range Rover specialists sell a box spanner for and £7 IIRC infact I think I still have mine which you are more than welcome to but I think postage could be a bit expensive.

There is no huge rush. The MOT is not for over a couple of months, and it's currently only being used to go a mile down the road and back to walk the dogs... Plus, if this weather doesn't Naff off, I may have to rent some space off Timbuk and ask for some help...

I suspect its bearing given that the play goes when the brake is applied.

I would pop the cap off the hub nut nad tighten it a little to see if the play can be removed to prove the point, its possible its been removed and poorly fitted.

The trick here is to remove the road wheel and pop the cap etc off so you can see the nut, refit the wheel and adjust the hub nut feeling for play on the outer edges of the wheel.

Looks like you should be able to drive the races out with a cold chisel, use the old races as a drift to fit the new ones.

That a good comprehensive guide to work from. you should be able to manage it. looks time consuming though and rather complicated to me ::)

I'll manage. Thankfully it won't be too expensive anyway.

If anyone has done one before though, and fancies supervising me, it would be appreciated :y

Easy enough, as I said above!

They are the same setup on the Discos, Range Rovers and series land rovers.

Note on that maintenance guide that the cause of failure is micro welding to the race causing pitting which looking at the rollers I suspect is due to water ingress.

A tip, put grease around the lip seal of the new seal before assembly and use some very fine wet and dry to clean the surface the seal runs on up.

Done loads of them there not that hard and you dont need a big socket or spanner as they are not tight.  should take about an hour or so. And as marks dtm said you can knock the old races out with a cold chisel.

Done the rear bearing on the lads 3.9 alongwith both rear discs and pads the other week.  Standard, straightforward task, no horrors.  Box spanner more than enough, unlike if doing the front bearings on an Omega.....

Thanks for the words of reassurance, B, I'll give you a bell if I get stuck :D

I think the Fronts and rears are the same on the Landies?

Does the disk come off the car with the hub attached as one, or do you have to remove the disk first?

Oh, I didn't know your lad had a 3.9... is it a Range Rover or a Discovery? Does he enjoy it, beside's the crazy fuel consumption? ;D

Ive worked for a bearing manufacturer for 37 years and in my experience if the bearing is worn/slack/dry then the race will be knackered. If when you take it off and there is still grease in the bearing you may get away with just tightening it up. If it's dry replace it. As you said a new one is only a tenner. We use Sikes Pickavant bearing pullers which can remove the race easily in our maintenace dept. My company do their own version but we prefer the PS version. Best of luck. :y
