Title: Road to hell, road to bliss...
Post by: Rods2 on 15 March 2012, 01:10:02
We all hate going to certain places, so the journey there is the road to hell, and the return jouney as you leave the area the road to bliss.

My road to bliss, used to be A3 / M3 to Portsmouth / Southampton / Poole to catch a ferry to France for a holiday / weekend break,  :y :y :y and the road to hell was the return journey to join the Monday morning rat-race.  >:( >:( >:(

What is your road to hell and road to bliss?

As I wrote recently I moved from home next to Ukrainian border to live cheaper. After a private life disaster I had no time to hesitate but did and done. My road to bliss is my way home where I was born and where my family and friends live. The road to hell is my coming back to a cheap but really sh*t place where I am living now...This road is real and symbolic, too....

Very good question Rods, thank you!  :y

A few for me:

I had family living in Spain. Journey is nearly 1700km. Journey is done in one go - whilst family sleep and enterain each other, I drive. The going is great. This is bliss. Returning is awful, especially because the end of any long journey is tiresome. This one is particulary bad, as it feels like when you "nearly home" you've still got 200km to go. Not alot, but after 1500km ...it's long. This is hell.

My eldest daughter lives with her mother, 65km away. Usually I pick up my daughter from school, but occasionally have to pick up from her mothers place. One time I did this journey, and just as I was within 10km of her place, the radio station played Chris Rea's Road to hell. Thought it was fitting (not from my daughter POV of course.)

Last one. A mixture. When returning here from a visit to the UK, I love coming home. That's the bliss part.
The hell part is purely as a result of the road network.
From Calais to here, (not so far - 450km) the journey can be broken down into little segments, with each "segment" defined by motorway changes, city ring road, country border. After that final motorway change, when I feel I am nearing home and usually starting to feel a little tired and relaxed, I spot a sign "Luxembourg 159km" and then adding on the exta 40km for me, the near home feeling suddenly dissipates. Happens every time.  ??? I know the sign is there, but still it gets me.

My Road to hell is anywhere over 60 miles away from home when I have to drive. Don't really have a road to heaven, except maybe when Allington Lane near me still had a national speed limit and I still one of my Manta GTE's. That put a big smile on my face. Sadly now has 40mph limit, no reason for change as far as I can see as no new properties or new roads have been built anywhere near it.

A85 Dundee to Perth, both ways, hateful dual carraigeway, don't know why, even now when I don't even live there but sometimes have to use it when back in Scotland.

I just hate it.

Bliss, is the journey from Forfar to Kyle of Localsh, great single track in places and brilliant scenery.

Road to hell is the A4123 (Birmingham New Road) from Wolverhampton to Birmingham. Just a total car park. Road to bliss is the

A49 from Chester through Whitchurch, Shrewsbury, Church Stretton and down in to hereford. Hardly any traffic and just lots of open and twisty bits :)

Prison or College? ;)

The A303 is a mixed one for me. Used to take a lot of holidays in North Devon, so good from that point of view, but when it goes wrong it's not a nice place to be.

Best way is to tackle it a 4 AM. I remember, back before most of it was dual carriageway, making Camberley to Barnstaple in a shade under 2 hours in an MG Montego (yes, making it at all was impressive, of course!). Oh, the pre-Gatso days. ::)

 ;)

I have 2 roads to heaven. 1 the road into calaise docks to come home. 2 as Dan says the A49 we truckers call it scenic rout to south wales.

LOL they have a house there  ;)
took me 3.50mins from here (pretty much where the a303 starts) to porthallow on the lizard peninsula last time, the last stretch through all the tiny lanes takes the longest lol, with light traffic. its nice  on the A30 now its pretty much all dual carrigeway to penzance, and the gatso's are pretty much all off all the way  :y

As per Chris Rea's song "Road to Hell"...........the M25!!

Now think about what driving around the SE was like before the M25.

I live in Chatham, and used to see my grandparents in Crawley 45 miles away. That would take 2 hours, whether we went through Tonbridge and East Grinstead, or Sevenoaks and Redhill. I worked in Crawley for more years than I want to think about, and if it took an hour it had been a bad trip. 45 minutes is easy, and at the right time of day, 30 minutes.

Going to High Wycombe to see my great grandmother used to be an awful trip across Tolworth towards Slough and up. Took 3 hours each way if we were lucky. Now it's an hour, not that I've anyone to see there now!

Heathrow is an hour away. Or God knows how long around the South Circular or up to the river and out along the A4.

The M25 isn't the road to Hell, but the road around Hell! But all big cities are crap places to drive; try Paris!

Three of us do it a couple of times a year, Manta ( me ) ,E30  and Mk2 Escort .
Quite a spontaneous thing usually after a call the previous evening after seeing that the forecast is good we're up there about 6am. A bit more sedate than Mcrae but at that time , deer aside  >:(, you can enjoy the road .
Watching the sun rise up there is a very beautiful thing. Carry on down to Sneem for breakfast and then back along the coast road ,collect the papers ,and home for 10.

Hell ?   Nope , can't think of one ......... ;D

I used to work for an adventure travel company as a driver/tour guide based in Africa and ran 13 week trips from Nairobi, Kenya down to Cape Town, South Africa, in converted Mercedes 1617 trucks.  Depending on the clients the 13 weeks was a blast and would certainly class as my road to (in!) heaven.  :y :y :y

At the end of the trip however, we'd 'double man' back to Nairobi and with no tacho regs to worry about it was non stop!! Provided we timed the border crossings right we'd do the 5000kms on rough African roads in 4 days!! Hard going and at times certainly the road to hell!!!  ::) ::) ::)

High Wycombe to Coombe martin,  1 hour 50 minutes.....    the day after i got married......   1990...

the only time in my life i have EVER seen the M4 that empty at 10-10.30 am sunday morning.....  (the M5 wasn't bad either)

hopped up sennie,  on full chat....(end of the speedo territory)   passed all of 3 vehicles between maidenhead and bristol.

one of those was a stripey Jag..... reading his sunday paper...      ;)

oddly (bloody lucky really) decided not to give chase.....    mind you,  the sennie was big, and very white, and fairly recently ex-job (TVP)   and  with 3 aerials on the roof..   (2 phone, and one 2 way radio...  ) ,   all fully legit....     ;D

(it seemed important at the time.....    the holiday park office closed at 12,  we over slept and didn't a
wake up till 9.45...     15 minutes to get up, pack, load the car....    and fill up with fuel.... hit the A404 marlow bypass at 10 on the dot,  pulled in to the holiday camp at 11.50 to start our honeymoon   (   i TOLD you it seemed important...  )

 :y

My road to heaven though.....

A499 , then B4417   to Llangwnadl.

gorgeous....  great to drive  when it's not full of bloody tourists....    good fast straights....   great twisty bits....   fantastic scenery.

and family & friends at the end of it...

what  more can a man ask?

road to hell.

pretty much everything in south east of england,.
