Title: Yet more issues with the headlight controls
Post by: doz on 15 March 2012, 18:30:41
Right I swapped the front level sensor and cleared the fault codes but I'm still getting issues. I'm now getting a different code come up which says "low voltage/not present". My initial thoughts are it's a broken wire to the sensor. I want to do a check on the wiring back to the control box. Can anybody tell me where the box is? Or if this a common code (sorry can't remember the number) to a common problem

Cheers all

The headlight control ecu is behind the offside front wing.  Ideally you will need to remove the O/S headlight to get good access to it.  It's a black box about 4x4x1 inches in size, and is clipped into a white plastic holder that is in turn bolted to the inner wing.  :y

Cheers. That's not to bad to get to to test the wiring. I don't suppose anybody's got a wiring diagram for the headlight control? I'm pretty sure the three wires at the sensor will be earth, feed from control box or 12v supply and return to the control unit from the sensor

Historically, most issues revolve around the two sensors front and rear, motors in the back of the head light issue, or as you said, a wiring issue to the sensors.

I had a problem on my current 3.2 where the loom had been rubbing on the arch liner, had to solder and heat shrink tube the rubbed through wire then route the loom correctly.

Cheers for that. I'll give that a good look when I try and sort it.

Guys I need more help with this. I can't find the headlight control box for love or money. Bearing in mind my car is a facelift is it likely the box is in another place? According to the Haynes book the earlier cars had them behind the the splash guard of the off side inner wing. I can't see how. The plastic shield is flat against the metal in front of the strut. This is seriously starting to tick me off

Hurrara!!! I found it. Boooooo it's still broken. All wires checked and ok. So after much faffin around (since 10 this morning) I can only come to the conclusion the new(ish) sender unit I fitted has got issues. So it looks like I'm on the hunt for another one. Bugger it I may just buy brand new this time. Thing was sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't but after much testing the return voltage to the headlight control unit is non existent most of the time. I thought it was the wiring but even with lots of wiggerling the resistance  in the wire stayed low really low. How ever while measuring the return voltage from the level unit. Nothing. I compared the readings on the rear sensor at the control unit end and your only looking for about 2 volts with the car on the level. Big big bum holes!!!! However I did fit my new disc and pads on the front while I was there. Does anybody know the part number for the front sensor by any chance
