Title: cam belt failure v6?
Post by: MonzaGSE on 17 March 2012, 15:00:45
Hi. Driving home from work yesterday the Omega suddenly died. Heard horrible metallic crunching noise as it happened. Tried starting it afterwards but engine youst going round on starter with apparently no compression. Cam belt cover seems to have separated a little bit allthough i cant be sure it wasnt always like that. Car is 94 Opel Omega mv6(x30xe). Thought it looked like the cam belt where still in place over one cam-wheel looking through the gap in the cover, but im not really sure. Engines done 350.000km. Cam belt changed approx 3 years 50.000km ago. appologize for bad english as im from Norway:) Whats the probable damage here? cambelt and 24 bent valves? cheaper to replace engine or more realistic scrap the car? whas doing around 80 km/h 2000 rpm when it happened.

Afraid it sounds like cambelt/tensioner has let go.

Bent valves certainly :(

You sure its a 94?

if the cambelt has slipped more than two teeth i am afraid it bad news for a few valves...
If you can source a known good replacement engine then you may find that better.
I have a perfect 3.0 engine here which has done a genuine 72000 miles which had a new cambelt on it two years ago.
I can also get it on a pallet and shipped too you.
If your interested let me know

Its sold new in 1995 but think its a 1994 model. If its the mv6 you think is strang remmember its Opel and not vauxhall. Opel used mv6 from 94 to approx 99 i think and its what vauxhall called Elite. The Vauxhall mv6 came later and had the 3 litre engine but less toys if i've understood it correctly. After some investigation ive found that the belt was changed just over 2 years ago at a garage. It may be a warranty issue. Will consider the engine Loo-knee but think the cost for engine and shipping might be more than just getting another car.

Found the old receipt for the cambelt change. Was done at 293136 km. Cars now at 353201. The cambelt should be chanhged every 60.000 km. Mine did 60.065 km when it snapped. Totally incredible. Probably best solution to look for some new heads as mentioned.
