Title: TomTom - Speed Camera Detection
Post by: JamesV6CDX on 22 March 2012, 13:03:04
Having read up on what I need to adhere to driving in France tomorrow, I note it's illegal to have any form of device in the car which contains speed camera locations.

My TomTom One XL Europe jobbie alerts me as to static camera locations in the UK. Do you know if (with standard maps) these things contain speed camera info for Europe as well as uk?

If so, I can't carry it!  :-[

its a stupid rule, I think it only applies if that setting is active!

How they intend to police this I don't know  :-\

It's easy in France. They spot a "rosbif" with a TomTom and frog march him to a cash point to extort an arbitrary fine, which they'll pocket, along with the TomTom, and send him on his way. ;)

Trick is to hide it I guess, similar threads on bike forums. Cause times I have used it, TomTom has been on my iPhone tucked inside my jacket pocket.

Guess they would want to do a full strip search on bikers then  ;D

I'm not sure they can be disabled, as such - think it's built in to the software?

I think the law says over there that you may not carry a device CAPABLE of detecting their locations... so if I have a tom tom in the car with the software installed, I could potentially turn it on and use it - making it illegal..  :-\

Thing is, I think I need it to navigate.. :D

I believe that, like the UK, you need to have paid for the speed camera stuff to have it - you're unlikely to have subscribed for all of Europe, I imagine?

If you have, plug the tomtom into your PC, run TomTom Home and remove the French speed camera database. Now you're fine, carry the TomTom as normal and use it to navigate.

In France, not sure how they police the situation concerning the detectors. As for speeding there are a more and more fixed cameras, which on GB plates you should have to worry about too much I guess. Don't quote me on that though, I am just speaking from my own experience with a German plated car and 3 flashes in one trip down to Spain. Never heard anything. Occasional roaming patrol and from memory of a few years ago, an on the spot fine of around 100 euro. Over 160kmh / 100mph they have the right to impound the car, although in reality with a foreign car they would probably give a big fine. They always give receipts too!

In the Netherlands, be careful. There is very very little tolerance for speeders, in the sense of allowance above the limit. You don't see so many roaming patrols, but quite a few fixed cameras. If they are watching you, 125km in 120km limit will mean a ticket probably.

Have a good trip

Remember you have to carry breathalysers in France now as well, along with the jerkins, bulb kits etc etc
