I have removed a mass of Ivy which was destroying part of a fence. Ive cut the root just above ground level - the root must be about 3 inch in diameter.
Whats the best way to kill it?
I dont have ay used engine oil, but have heard that parafin or Jeyes fluid poured down a hole drilled in the stump should do the trick.
Thanks

Diesel does the job well :y

drilling holes in it and push bit of copper tube into holes, the reaction to the copper kills it and also not as illiegal as tipping fluids around your garden to get into watercourse

Yep as above bang some copper pipe into it does the trick lovely.

yep as previous two posts some copper nails/pipe will do the trick :y

got plenty of copper nails here lol :D

Hang on if its only 3 inchs round cant you dig around the base and cut roots a lump of copper pipe will be 15 or 22mm you will only need one bit. ;D :y :y

Ok, so if I drill a 16mm hole as deep as possible and then drive in a length of 15mm copper pipe that should do the trick? Should be able to get about 3 inches or so in .....

When did it some years ago I digged around the tree, cut all the roots I was able to and the rest of tree and roots were pulled out simply by a small tractor. Not a job I'm dreaming of but I could do it without using of any chemicals or semtex ... :y

I've taken now taken the roots of about 10 trees. Two were oak and very difficult, the rest as I cut the trees down, I left about 1.5m of the 150mm diameter trunk, so I could use that for leverage. Then just a case of digging around the roots and chopping through them with an axe, until the tree is loose enough, then using the trunks leverage to snap the rest. :y :y :y
