Title: creaking suspension
Post by: aitch015 on 25 March 2012, 15:25:23
hi all,
I have a creaking noise from the f/n/s when turning the steering,it also creaks when i bounce the car wing. I think it is coming from the drop link but reading old posts they are more likely to make a knocking sound when worn.
Incidently i have found a pair on ebay for a tenner,are they that cheap because they are rubbish?

Any thoughts or advice most appreciated.

Martin

Could be anything. Bushes, any joint.

An easy test would be to spray a siliscon(not petro chemical based) lube on/into the bush rubber. Then re bounce the suspension, see if it stops.

Another common one, wishbone bushes split, then the sides of the split chafe against each other as the bush twists.

Creaking when turning the steering is likely to be the bearing in the strut topmount.
Mine were terribly noisy. It's a cheap fix if you do the work yourself, as it's a matter of stripping the bearing, cleaning, it and and regreasing. The bad news is that removing the strut to do the job creates all the usual alignment issues.

Lemforder are GM supplier of most of the relevant parts, and considerably cheaper.
See allgermanparts.
Eg;
Wishbones. GM £235 a side. Lemforder £130 a pair.

I'd say GM where a lot more in some cases, although roll bar bushes are a couple of quid. As usual, best course is correct diagnosis as best possible, then ask on here where to get the replacement part.
