Title: Insurance renewal and other things.
Post by: bootie on 29 March 2012, 11:05:52
I had my renewal notice through while I was in Scotland, £198 and some pennies.
I went onto the comparison websites and the best I got for exactly the same level of insurance was £148 and pennies so I phoned my present company giving them the chance to match or better, they couldn't so no loyalty from me, funny thing is both companies are brokers for BISL Ltd!

The other thing is, when I went into the garage that is changing the #4 injector they informed me the fuel filter was full of petrol!!!! They had kept it after changing it and showed me.....it was! So at some point somebody had obviously filled it with petrol, well probably not filled but some had gone in at some point.
Now I know it wasn't me, I have made that mistake in the past and am always really careful about this. SWMBO also is very careful as it was her Zafira I filled (from almost empty)!
How the hell did this engine keep running???
Matt, my garage man did explain that this could have been the problem with the leak off pipes as they don't like petrol and tend to go a bit soft once contaminated and also could have contributed to the injector failure and the problem with cutting out and slightly difficult to start in January.
What to other OOF'ers think about this? Are they pulling my plonker or what?

To tell you the truth Graham I don't know. They were doing an MOT when they discovered this and couldn't complete because the emissions would have been all fouled up.
The car is now back at my young lad's place with the pass certificate and the emissions print out so obviously it has passed.
I have read reports about the petrol causing problems with the fuel lines as they are (supposed to be) fuel specific. This is something I will have to check out when I get back to the UK. They did do the filter/diesel magic procedure and by all accounts it appears to be running OK, but, again this is something I will check out myself next month. As the car doesn't get used that much from month to month, the fuel remains sitting in the lines, is that going to degrade the inside of the pipes and cause further problems?

well, as diesel does not degrade anything like as quickly as petrol(can be years old and still work ok) assuming the lines are not damaged at mo and of course most of them are plastic bar a few rubber bits along the system, would guess it could only be the rubber parts that would be damaged but its highly unlikely to be honest,
I would say barring a diesel drainback problem it should be ok to sit for a couple of months no problem,
as ever though i dont know the car, or the standard of workmanship, so i could be wrong!! lol
should be ok though mate :y
