As mentioned in the title on my DTi 03' how do i go about replacing my handbrake cable on the offside and adjusting them both up because i have NOO handbrake lol
Thank you
Sam ;)
-
Afaik you need to replace both sides as the unit comes as a whole - two cables joined by the adjuster bar (or whatever it's called?). So you can't do only one side :y
-
Sorry should add, it's not a difficult job, just a little awkward. Particularly the adjusting nut due to a lack of spanner space, and removing the heat shields :y
-
Cable around £20 from decent motor factors Sam :)
-
i would be looking more for lack of adjustment at the wheel end or worn out shoes tbh first.

When I did mine on my old MFL following an MOT failure, I worked away at the near side wheel assembly and 'pulled' on the bit of exposed cable that runs from the underbody to the wheel as a means of testing the brake. Thought I had it sussed, but failed again. Turned out the cable was seized! No idea how you would diagnose that but it did explain why only one side was failing.

thanks for the reply everyone, but Johny when i pull on the exposed cable there is nothing at all it is solid and wont pull at all

Is the handbrake on? Should be some play if its off.
What are the symptoms that it's not working? As Jon says, it may be more than the cable.

Does sound like a seized cable, a common fault if its an auto as many people dont use it, just the park function of the gearbox. keith B

Its a 2.2 diesel so only came with a proper gearbox ::)

Won't have those heat shields to remove either then so easy to get to the centre adjuster.

Even better :y

well what i have is its completly dead on the driverside rear but slightly working passanger side so to my surprise the only hold i get is on the highest click on the old handbrake!
so its just me guessing hence there being no play in the cable that its seized itself.

how many notches is that sam?
-
i cant remember off hand but its f#ucking high about 6 or 7 but the first 4 feel absolutly useless

Does sound like its seized, though I would have thought there should be some play in the exposed cable, to take up the slack to the brake? Not sure if you can check by just using the mechanism at the back of the hub? And aren't there return springs - are they present / intact? Just thinking of options before replacing the cable .....

im gunna get the back end in the air over the weekend and see whats up :y probably the best way then ill find the best way forward ::) ;D

While your under there get a wire brush and Plusgas on the heat shield nuts, you will end up breaking a few when removing them ;)
