Title: What is the problem with these rear coil springs?
Post by: Bionic on 14 April 2012, 15:53:24
 :D
DLK put a pair on my Elite 3.0 saloon for me about 8 months ago so I know they were installed correctly. Parked up last night and heard a pop so looked around the car for anything obvious and saw nothing. Started it again and it ran as always, quiet and smothly so turned it off and went in. Following morning I got in and drove off but noticed a black ring on the road where I had been parked so I reversed back until I was behind it and recognised it as the eye of a coil spring! Still shiny black too and with a spotless stress break. Never been over a surface that would cause it, or any speed humps, potholes etc so I am at a loss as to why it decided to give up the ghost.
Sods law maybe cos we go on holidays in a few weeks............
Anyone know if this is regular problem with miggys?
Is there such a thing as uprated heavier duty springs?
:-X Trying really really hard not to cuss......................so ARGGGGGGHHHHHHH instead!

Guess any part can suffer a defect.  I thought they normally broke due to corrosion weakening them...

I think I remember reading somewhere it effects all springs made in europe. Something to do with how hard the metal is. It does not effect Japanese cars anywhere near as much.

This is of course if my memory is still working.  ;D Think honestjohn mentioned it.

Had two alhambras and they both snapped a spring. My friend had a 92 Audi with Billys shock and springs. 3 of the 4 were snapped. I've never had a Carlton snap one but know some who have. I do keep spares for the Carlton and LC come to think of it I've got a set of genuine springs for use with air shocks  here some. I wonder if there the same as the Omega

Were they new ones?

I had the same thing happen to me recently - mine weren't new springs when fitted  :-[

I'd expect any spring to last at least 4 years on an Omega, even the cheap, nasty ones.

Made in Europe? Maybe if that is so then its just another good reason to dump the place!
No, the springs were not new but they were totally umarked and had not been painted over or retouched. DLK would not have put on dodgy ones if the knew they were not right. Looks like another job going his way though...........and some more tinnies for lube...... :D
Would it make any difference if heavy duty ones were fitted?

Ah, if they were not new, all bets are off.

Rear springs on omegas are prone to failure

Yes there are heavy duty springs, fitted to Police Omegas to cope with all extra stuff they haul around. Very expensive, even on TC from Vx, not sure about any pattern examples  :-\

Same here for the Beemer.
BMW want £160 for ONE spring as it's M-Sport from factory, I had 4 Eibach springs (which is what M-Sport use anyway) delivered to my door for £130 inc VAT & postage.

Before getting my 1st Omega, I had never, ever experienced a broken spring. Since having an Omega, I've experienced several ;D

Would the weight of the car be a contributing factor, as Omegas do seem more prone, IME

Yep, that is my experience aswell. Even our Carltons never broke a spring.

Marks DTM Calib, with all due respect, what is causing modern springs to break then ? It would appear to the average person that european cars are more prone to breakage than other countries cars.

Not trying to be funny or anything, just asking.

Poorer roads, stiffer chassis and harder suspensions......all in the name of better of handling.

Those stresses have to go somewhere and steel does fatigue!

Heavier cars dont help either (and they are all getting heavier)

As Mrks was saying about weight.
Use common sense.
More weight means springs compress more (work more) and that leads to wear and tear.
Bad roads done help either

What about heavy landings ::)

I often wonder if stones land on the base pad that the spring compresses onto, getting trapped under the spring as it compresses. Spring brakes over the stone.

Doesn't explane why they brake at the top occasionally though.

::) Hmmmm, Point to ponder that one is cos all of my springs that have snapped were all at the top coil eye........
Maybe I will start to refit the spring assister donuts that I used to use when towing during which time I strangely never had any springs go on me. The ride was not affected very much either.
Comments?? Anyone else tried them and npoted the same?

I had to fit two new rear springs to an e46 coupe yesterday, still shiny painted but broken none the less, low milage and not a very heavy car ???

All the spring assistors are likely to do is transfer more stress to the spring ends.

The issue with second hand springs is not knowing how far down the wear curve they are.

Happy to fit a new set for you if you get some.

Lincolnshire has some of the worst B roads in the UK  :o and now with 6 years in my ownership whilst carrying a large dog cage + 2 dogs, sorry lost our boy last year  :'( now only 1 Dally, and maybe as stated above I should consider uprating to 'Heavy Duty Springs'  ASP  ;)
