Title: What turned out to be a rocker cover gasket has developed further

Now looks like 2 rocker gaskets, new spark plugs as well as ht leads as mine has now snapped. Grr more money :(

Surely if one cam cover seal has failed, and the other has not, it makes sense to do both sides ASAP?

The other failed too after removing the ht leads to find the plugs swimming in oil. Oh well never mind :)

Yep. If one side's knackered, the other side will follow shortly. A total false economy to do one side only.
