The 22 month old cheapo motor has failed again in my 16/17yr old DC04. The motor housing already has had an emergency repair.
Whilst I'm not a Dyson fan, they have the advantage, due to popularity, of plenty of info and spares, so wouldn't be against having another. Whatever I get, it would be another bagless vac.
-
My thoughts on Dyson vacs are well known!

Buy a new one you tight bu66er :y :y :y

I love them. Had one for donkeys years and never had a problem :)

I'm kinda in the same boat. But the availability of parts and information (not from Dyson I might add!) does elevate them significantly IMHO. I'm sure many RWD Vauxhall owners only hang on to their Omegas due to the parts and info available to them ::)

Ours is like Trigger's broom ;D
-
I even have a old one in the garage which gets used hard I've been known to vacuum the garage floor to get rid of the concrete dust . Only problem I've ever had is I've got to put my hand over the end of the pipe and kind of force it to star sucking otherwise it's useless. I'd fix it. As you know you've already repaired it once and it gave a couple years good service. It will probably do the same again

One word, Meile :D :D :y

Get a Henry. :y
Had one at University. Everything that landed on the floor that shouldn't have been there, it dealt with. Most things were "outside the brief of its' design". This is university accommodation we're talking about. Use your imagination. ;)
Dysons are able to cope with one particular type of dust well, for everything else they are as much use as the proverbial used condom.
-
depends what the part will cost. I got a bagless one from homebase to replace my dyson years ago and its going strong £30! but may of been in a sale lol
-
Got a DC04 here, still going strong. Mind you only used about once a month ::)
-
I love Dysons :).

Its a rather vaccum.....how much info do you need!
There's a switch, a lead, a motor and possibly a belt. If its MEGA complex it might even have a controller for the brush height. ;D ;D ;D

Fixed that for you. ;)

I agree with Kevin,
We've had a few Dyson's and as funky as they are, they're just not that good!
We now have a Henry, also got one at work in the engineering workshop for 13 years or so and it's never broke down!
-
£50 and Dyson visit the house and repair all, full sevice. Job done. Think there is a further warranty from then on.(doesn't cover the interchangeable tools though)
Dysons are good IMO. Bit definately fragile.
Henry's are almost bullet proof though, but I hate that design for round the house work. Fine in a work environment, but large areas, it's got to be in upright or all the corners on the skirting get battered.
-
Knowing how tight you are, go for the cheapest option ::) ;D
I've had mixed experiences with Dysons but must admit they're normally pretty good. I picked up a cheapy Vax bagless thing last year in Makro and it's been superb :y

Someone got the sack at my old place for stealing a Henry , we got it back and had a lot of abuse with us all playing skittles with it ;D worked for 10 yrs +

My £50 bagless wet & dry Wickes shop vac (bit like a Henry, it's a bucket with a motor in it) sucks 10 times harder than my DC01 ever has.. I wouldn't bother with another Dyson unless it were free.
A friend of mine has had his Wickes vac in the garage for 8 years or so (it's why I bought one) - we've emptied 2" of water/coolant & oil emulsion out of his pit with it, sucked up wet rags, leaves, dust, nuts, bolts, cable ties.. even used it to vacuum bleed the coolant system on an MR2 once or twice. It just keeps on suckin'.

I've got one of those, works well. I got it to replace the Dyson I had, when the motor caught fire :o
about 2 months after the warranty ran out >:(
-
As I have posted previously I don't no how the hell Dyson got away with there advertisement claim of "no bag so no loss of suction" they certainly loose suction when the filters get choked >:(

How they work is pretty self explanatory, and even a stupid kid like me can diagnose faults easy enough.
Getting the little tinkers apart without breaking clips/tabs/other cheapskate designs, that's where I need guides ;D

+2 Got an old, metal, Henry in the garage, dates from the early 80's, gets all the crappy jobs and still on the original motor....... :y :y
-
got a dyson in the house, a henry in the studio, and a big orange vax for jobs neither of the other two like.....
dyson is a bit crap, henry is okay, but not all that... the vax is frigging awesome, or it would be, if the wheels didn't break off their body mounts one by one and leave you with a rather immobile lump.... still hoovers and carpet washes brilliantly..... been going strong for about 9-10 years... done building sites, flooded garage, flooded studio, flooded kitchen, and never a moment's hassle (other than having to pick the sodding thing up and move it)
yeah... it needs a bag.... so what..... got the dyson coz i thought bagless would be cool.... but it's not a patch on the vax for getting , say, trodden in plaster dust out of a contract carpet.... (JUST as a hoover..... not even using the wash function)
-
Only a Hoover is a Hoover, the rest are Vacuums ::) ;D
I used to work for a well known electrical retailer many years ago and it used to pi55 me off when a customer asked for one of those Dyson Hoovers, I used to say there's no such thing ;D
-
Use a Dyson for the everyday stuff but a VAX for proper cleaning, it will suck up anything. Now where the Chocolate Lab ;) ;D
-
Still undecided. Probably fix the old one. Again. Might buy another anyway, dunno, would save her struggling carting it up the stairs.
Got a Vax, cant get to it currently, as the contents of my office are in the spare room ::)
-
Sebo's are supposed to be pretty good :y
-
there is a bit of a trend here with TB and home appliances ::) ::)
-

i wanted to get a may ling but wifey said NO only 5 dollar plus you get sucky breaky licky dickie.....cant see whjat the problem was myself :o
-
Get a Henry. :y
Seconded, although avoid the cheaper model as they have crap motors that only last a couple of years :y
We bought our Henry Plus back in 99 and it performs just as well now as it did when new, the only money we have spent on it in that time is the cost of a replacement hose.
-
Sebo, with motorised head.Havent seen anything that can match it.
Dyson are shite. Colourful,funky,gimicky,useless shite.
-
New motor and motor housing ordered.
As to them being shite, I'd like to agree. Not entirely sure I can. Certainly not fantastic, but unfair to say shite.
My DC04, a million years old, has had a couple of mains leads, a couple of hoses, and this will be its 4th motor. If you saw the way it was treated, that's not bad IMHO.
A friend, a good friend we sometimes holiday with, owns a tool hire biz. In a druken state, up in the hills between Coral Bay and Latchi, I asked him what he hired out. Expecting him to say Kirby/Henry/Nilfisk etc, I was knocked out when he said Dyson. Properly serviced, they give him little trouble. Shocked.

Dug out the old Vax, so she could vac the place. Great suction - will suck a golfball through a hose better than any tart - but a bit bulky/annoying.
She's bust that now. *sigh*
