Title: Child hood toys
Post by: waspy on 02 April 2008, 19:19:40
What did you have as a child & so wish you'd kept :question
You can usually find a replacement on ebay etc, but it's never the same :(
There's loads of things i gave away as a teen-anger thinking i don't want these young things any more, but when you get older still, you think i wish i'd kept that  :'(

All the Dinky, Corgi Matchbox toys i had. When i was a kid all i cared about was them & my bike. Every Xmas b'day i was given airfix, spirograph etc that never got used. Also loved Scalextric but always got told off for putting corgi/matchbox cars or lego houses on the track & crashing into them!
Seemed like a good idea to me when i was 7 or 8. :)

I always credit the Meccano set that my dad bought me for my seventh birthday for first promoting my interest in spanner twirling. After numerous warnings off my mum that if I left it all over the floor after playing with it she would "bin the lot" I still did and mum carried out her threat! :o :'(

I've got a collection of early diecast & some scalextric but all from ebay, none of my originals. Had a new Raliegh Chopper (a blue one) cool at the time but they were a pig to ride if we're honest.

I remember TCR racing, thinking back I don't think it ever worked properly.
My one toy I really enjoyed was a large bag of Lego.
It would cost a fortune at todays prices, but to be honest I don't know what happened to it.
For all I know, Mum and Dad probably threw it away. :'(

Stick it on Ebay, worth an absolute fortune nowadays!!

Not many things that I had when I was younger that I wish I had now, as has ben said before - when you get bigger so do the toys.

But I will confess to having just bought an airfix helicopter of Ebay the other day. It arrived at the office this morning and I had a whole 10 minute flashback to my youth whilst I was carefully unwrapping it all and unfolding the instructions out :D

Best toy I ever had was a bit of old junk that I crafted into a nozzle that held the top of a 2 litre plastic coke bottle with a perfect seal. Had a feed from the garden hose to fill it with water, and a feed from a foot pump in case more pressure was required. pump up the bottle and release... :o

I perfected the ratio of air and water required for maximum height, and things started to get a little scary with respect to the neighbour's greenhouse, so I tied a 150 foot length of kite string to said bottle thinking that'd keep my little rocket under control. Nope. String pulled tight and snapped, bottle carried on regardless. :o

Had more fun playing with that than I would with any expensive toy.

I suspect it's a good thing I didn't have an air compressor then. I have now, though... ::)

Remember caps, they used to come in a little round cardboard box which was wrapped in a paper tube. One day I placed about three boxes still wrapped in the paper tube on a kerb and whacked them with a lump hammer, I had ringing in my ears for days ;D

Another on was get a big nut and two bolts and put as many caps in the nut as possible and tighten the bolts into either end of the nut then throw it in the air, when it hit the deck it would explode and sometimes come apart. It was hours of fun until it went through Martin Craigies front window, my dad beat the living daylights out of me, them were the days ;)

.. and then there were the home made explosives... Pop round to see my mate whose Dad ran a garden centre for some potassium nitrate... Never got a particularly loud bang but managed to vapourise a length of copper pipe in record time.

And people moan about the price of toys, etc. The things I got most of my enjoyment out of were practically free (and probably not legal, but never mind).

The older ones are better as toys, the newer models are a bit too fragile. That said there are some toy ranges again from both Hornby and Bachmann (less detailed, cheaper), but my boys only play under supervision and do have an expensivish loco they bought shared.

If you get him a train se he may continue the great hobby when he is an adult.

At our last house (garden was a big bigger, but was flatter) I built a garden line, about a 20m to 30m run, and I ran stuff collectors would rather leave wrapped up and not taken out of the box.

my kids have psp, ps2,ps3,nintendo wi,32" telly, video, dvd player, laptop each, pc,2 hi fis, 2 portable stereos, mobile each, mp3 each, and more

i didnt need all that stuff, my parents sent us out till lunch time then afternoon then evening and they didnt have to worry about ringing us every hr to see where we was, because we had a great crack with no worriesof being stabbed robbed or mugged. and we never had none of the stuff kids have nowadays.

I wouldn't have wanted it to be honest - I couldn't have been happier playing footie in the field, or falling off my Chopper by trying to ride it through half built houses on the building site

They fence them off now, had loads of fun on building sites, sued to build 'caps' or in the woods. Kids are just as safe playing out now, it's society and the media that seems to frown on it. imho

TCR, but it never ever worked properly ::)

Yeh, i remember TCR Total Control Racing (or in your case)
My mate had one of these & i loved it  :y

Yeah! I had a TCR and also a matchbox powertrack, I think that is what it was called. (The one with the headlights so you could race in the dark) :y

What was the 'matchboc'?? one called. It had a slotted spring going round and you got little stick things to put on any matchbox car.
Really technical with my description arnt I :D :D :D
Matchbox motorway, sticky pins fell off and springs got tangled then it was breaked.
