Title: Oh the shame of it
Post by: redelitev6 on 23 April 2012, 20:28:46
:-[ I'm on the point of being made redundant from the council after 23 years service ,at nearly 52 i've got no illusions about my employment prospects in the building industry, however, here's the rub, i have the chance to be re-deployed as a Traffic warden , never thought i'd be in such a position but with mortgage etc i'm up a well known creek without a paddle , do i swallow my pride and go for it or take my redundancy and hope for the best. What would you chaps do ?

Sorry to hear that, but it may not all be doom and gloom :-\

Not sure where in the country you are but jobs are hard to come by at the moment ;)

I'd say you need to do what's best for you. Change in pay? Change in pension entitlement?

Look at the much bigger picture IMO

Do bears sh*t in the woods ?

You take any job going and then look for other work  ;)

It's called keeping your self esteem and reasons to get out of bed for.
There is no such thing as pride in this world, its called survival  :(

Good luck  :)

If you stay on, do you lose any money/reduction in pension?

I'm thinking that there's no shame in being a Traffic Warden... At the end of the day, you're just trying to make a living ;)

If you take the job and then leave, you won't get the redundancy cash!!  ::) Would you be on the same salary/conditions if you became a Traffic Warden?  ???

Protected salary for 3 years then money/pension goes down after that

Incidentally, they should be offering you help in making this decision with guidance on CV's and possibly some financial advice too ;)

The thing to bear in imnd is that the redundancy package may only be offered the once... If you can find another job before the deadline then it's handy to have the payout in your back pocket ;)

I know how bad the jobs market is, in Newcastle. The only employment I can find is in London.

I personally would be very tempted to take the job. The redundancy will not last long.

Good luck with your decision.

If they're protecting the salary for 3 years you might be able to get the option of taking the job on a 3/6 month trial with the option of still taking the payout :-\

The redundancy packages are being cut every year ,if i'd gone 2 years ago i would have got nearly double what i've been offered now ! god knows what i'll get in another few years :(

The missus works so we have been paying the bills but the believe me, the hardest thing is sat on your arse not working :(

I've had my fair share of run-in's with traffic wardens but generally when they don't use a bit of common sense ::) If I've blatantly flouted the rules I just accept it and move on ;) At the end of the day, I've gotten away with parking against the rules enough times ;)

Nowt wrong with traffic wardens, people only have a go at them because they know they've done wrong, can't accept it, and try to project their wrongdoing onto them.

BTW I know of someone crying out for skip lorry drivers in Sunderland, he just can't get the drivers for one reason and another. I'd take it as a second job but I've got too much on atm.

Assuming you've got at least C1? Some travelling though.

Oh well, thought it might've helped, never mind, good luck finding a job. :y

Just an update on this, I spent the morning with the parking control guys and the job seems a lot better than i thought it would be ,couple of things suprised me ,one being everyone gets a 5 minutes grace period before tickets are issued, the software on the ticket machines won't allow a ticket to be issued until this period has expired .My little legs were knackered after a mornings walk ! something i'll have to get used to if I get the job.

I would look at your outstanding mortgage (if applicable) and any savings you may have. From this you can work out what you have to live on and your outgoings. Do a quick calculation. Personally i would take the reduncancy (and see if you can negotitate it up?) and take my chances thereafter. Does the type of work you are currently in permit you to offer your services back to the council (or other establishments) on a consultancy / self employed basis?

If anything redundancy will get less as the terms are being changed , as for offering my services back to the council, they are cutting back on all the work i was involved in ( homes modernisation) and have plenty of staff left in post

I think the lack of reaction to the type of job is down to the seriousness of the current climate and people accepting that a job is a job.  :y

I think most folks actually accept the need for Traffic Wardens, even if they won't admit it....  I have had the misfortune to try and work in an area where it became common knowledge that one warden did 5 towns, and the days he was in each was also known.

It was almost impossible to move in the towns on the days he was not there, idiots parking anywhere. Trying to get an LGV to a shop to deliver goods became impossible .... eventually the police got involved and issued a great number of tickets.. and the councils woke up and employed a few more wardens.

If folks used their brains/obeyed the rules there would be no need for wardens ....  unfortunately not everyone has/uses their brains. Like the transport manager who would not schedule deliveries for the days when the warden WAS on duty as that involved some work by him.

My foray into the world of Transport lasted a whole 7 weeks .. luckily the military had paid for my LGV training so it was not my money that was wasted ... but with idiots like that I just got out, and have stayed out, and now the LGV has lapsed as I would not pay for the medical  for something I wasn't going to use  :)

And to build on Entwood's comments, seeing as you're in Newcastle see if you can get posted to Gosforth High Street to move on all those gits who stop to go to the cash machines and cause havoc.  (It's a very busy road with two lanes in each direction and double yellows, but people think it's OK to stop for a few minutes at their bank or grab a pasty from Greggs and block the inside lane).  I've even seen a bus driver get out of his bus to go and use a cash machine there - oh, and the council employees who stopped their van to go and put a bet on at the bookies!

Vamps your really part of the admin team :o :o

i would take the job gives you more options and lets face it building trade is on its knees blah blah. As said when your in work it seems easier to get another job I got laid off from being a contracts manager some 4 years ago company went tits up went for lots of interviews and applied for hundreds of jobs the pay drop alone was very excessive ended up starting my own building works again small scale but only becuase i am lucky enough to have a good rep. But i disspair at times at the things you have to do or accept to earn a wage but i have been very lucky to be busy

and totally honest if i could get out the trade i loved so much i would its not what it used to be it just usally saddens me

so something fresh and new could be a very good move and more options

best of luck with it all

Nowt wrong with traffic wardens, people only have a go at them because they know they've done wrong, can't accept it, and try to project their wrongdoing onto them.

BTW I know of someone crying out for skip lorry drivers in Sunderland, he just can't get the drivers for one reason and another. I'd take it as a second job but I've got too much on atm.

Assuming you've got at least C1? Some travelling though.
No C1 although i was considering it if all else fails ,have been quoted around £1300 to get through test

Just thought if you'd done 23 years at in current job might've passed test before 97/98 whenever it was in which case i thought grandfather rights apply? not sure as i passed my test after then.

Oh well, thought it might've helped, never mind, good luck finding a job. :y
Nah , the buggers moved the goal posts last year ,got to be at least 55 to get anything now, the days of "gold plated" public pensions have gone :(

No i'm talking about driving tests not pensions
You are right got C1 on license
so long since i past test(1978) never gave it a second look!

Must be little skips then, I have driven skips in the past and they were HGV, or whatever it is called now.... ::) ::) ::)

On the other point, I would take the Job, you have 3 years protected salary, only 1 year in these parts in this new situation, as I understand.. :-\ :-\ Your redundancy money will soon go if you are not working and have to pay the Mortgage..........It is always easier to get another job when in work, I understand....and think positively, my job is even more unpopular that a traffic warden, and no I am not the tax man..... :D :D :D :-X :-X

social worker?
