Title: Insurance
Post by: Shackeng on 29 April 2012, 11:10:34
Comp or TPFT? With the (monetary) value of our Omegas today, it seems hardly worth paying fully comp, even though TPFT is not much cheaper. In my case having two Omegas I don't want to drive some c@#*py courtesy car anyway, and any shunt will almost certainly trigger a write -off.
Any thoughts? :-\ :y

Had the same thoughts when i had a mig only thing i found was the price between f/c and 3rd party was about 20quid so in my case wasnt worth the gamble,

£20 = 6 pints! My feeling is that any claim under comp. would trigger a write off, and as long as I can get minor shunts repaired for under a grand, it is not worth paying even the extra £20. So TPFT just ensures that I'm legal. :y

tbh 3 rd tpft can work out a lot more expensive ...they wanted to charge me £ 40 more than fully comp... :y

My on-line quotes are all somewhat cheaper. :y

Depends on personal situation and quotes... I've always gone FC because there was no/minimal price difference for me ;)

Now on full trade policy and TPFT would be considerably cheaper but doesn't give the cover I require for customer's cars ;)

I think sometimes tpft is more expensive than FC because the reasoning is if older cars like omegas are insured for the lowest price possible, they will not be looked after and/or driven in such a way it is deemed a higher risk by the insurer due to the lower value of the car.

Indeed, although if you can find a small, local independent fitter (like I have) the cost of a replacement screen is much more reasonable  :y

Still a lot more than £20 (over 10x more, in fact, in my case) ;)

But claiming for a windscreen on insurance costs more than £20 ;)

True, £70 or £100 I think the excess is on my other policy - £70 excess would have been better than £270 for a new screen, though ;D

(Not including any bump in premium next year, of course..)

That's the rub ;) They claim it has no impact but I bet it does ;)

£270 is steep though... Been quoted sub £200 including all new trims too ;)

The screen I had fitted to my last Mig was just over £100. I paid it myself so no effect on my insurance, and it only cost £25 more as my excess is £75.

Reason why I go with fully comp is if some uninsured driver hits me (  and drives off  ::) ).

I guess some areas are worse than others..........

Check your policy, I have noticed that Admiral have now put an excess on windscreen cover, on all our later policies, all fully comp.... >:( >:( Come September our Multi car will no longer be renewed...........Master Vamps can sort himself out, he will have 3 years NCB and can afford to insure himself this year, and we can go back to a sensible renewal price elsewhere..... :D :D

How about starting our own insurance insurance company, OOF Insurance ?. I understand you need a few quid in the bank (£1 M ?) to cover liabilities, and that's it. We have enough members, so an initial payment of say £1000 each and we have the balance, which provided its not claimed on, is still there ( earning interest  :y ). And we know enough guys breaking, good Mechanics, Sprayers etc so claim costs would be low.

An interesting idea.
