Title: gas boiler proplem advice needed
Post by: r1 on 29 April 2012, 15:25:47
our boiler is in the loft and in 2007 we had a lot of proplems with it but because it was covered by insurance we called them in to fix it.well we where without the boiler for about 2 months while diffrent fitters came and fitted diffrent parts and while we waited for parts to be arrive.after getting all of the insides of the boiler replaced they realised that there was a proplem with the flue so they fixed it and errected scaffolding to get on the roof and fix the top bit
fast forward till last friday when we decided to get the boiler serviced the fitter took one look at the flue and said it was unsafe  and was leeking gases into the loft so refused to service it and had to clamp it off so we now have no boiler.he has taken photos and but a report together for us to forward to the company that did the work and is also reporting them to the gas council.
now the parts for the flue will be about £2oo pounds, then the cost of the scaffolding so i reckon the job will be about £1000 in total
so we going to send them a letter and fax them on monday to see what they say.
should add that no one has worked on the boiler since them.
so anybody any thoughts? ideas? and if we stand a chance of them comeing to fix it,seeing it was done 4 plus years ago?

most flues are clamped together,if it is a vertical flue there is no way they could have screwed up installing it,also this should have been picked up on the yearly service aswell if there was a problem with it.Maybe post up some pics so as we can see what is going on  :y

Why would a bolier be fitted in a loft ???

Yes - as Marti says, a few photographs would be of use. :y

ive fitted boilers in lofts before, mainly due to space etc and out of sight  :y

dont know why it was fitted in the loft was there when we moved in.
from what the fitter said the flue pipe comes in meter sections and we needed a meter and a bit so they have just used a clamp to cover the gap instead of pipe leaving a 25mm gap.
will try to find the camera and take some pics

It my understanding from where I had log stove and flue fitted that there must be a 25mm gap where it goes through the roof, to stop the roof catching fire, :o a cowl is then fitted the other side to make it waterproof.

I was told not to put anything in the garage within 25mm of the flue for the same reason.

We have two in the loft, our flues only pass through the brick wall.  handy having two boilers as when one stops working (cr@p circuit board!!) the other stops us freezing.

I think if / when :-\ we change our boiler from our old back boiler any new one is likely to go in the loft, limited on space and where the gas is, without major upheaval..... :) :)

Might have to take some of the junk out first though..... ::) ::) ::) :-[ :-[

I notice in the description you say the the engineer that shut the boiler down took pictures and carried out a report. First off did he leave a warning notice and put a sticker on the boiler, regarding leakage of fumes, this is known as Spillage and if this is occuring there should be visible signs on the flue itself, boiler or flue joints. These will take the form of staining or black sooty marks which come off if you dampen your hand when touch them and then have to result to having to wash hands in soap to remove stains.
If there are no visible signs of spillage, then the engineer may have shut the boiler down on the basis he assumes the construction of the the flue to be incorrect and as such may be spilling P.O.Cs, Products of Combustion.[CARBON MONOXIDE] into the loft area.
As you have not put up any pics this is more difficult, however from what you say from the break down history, fitting all these new parts with big waiting times in between, still not working and discovering the Flue at fault, tells me only one thing The previous engineers had nt a clue what was wrong with your boiler and just kept throwing parts at at it until it worked.
Regarding can you do anything about this. The regulations are very strict on this.
If any Gas Safe Registered company as it is now,or Corgi as it was then, installs a flue incorrectly,or not fit for purpose and then at a later date is deemed to be unsafe, due unsatisfactory materials or poor workmanship then the Company in ? could find themselves in big trouble, if not already, provided a R.I.D.D.O.R has been raised against them.
You are in a good position here, if the company in ? and provided they still trading.I think you will find they ll  be very keen to rectify the situation at No Cost.
If by now they have nt contacted you thats very un professional. Then contact them again by E mail informing them unless they discuss this matter, then they have you put in position with no option to contact Gas Safe Register for an Independant Survey. [which is free]. Which should wake them up a bit.. I hope this helps.  :y
I would be interested to know what make & model of boiler you have in the the loft, you can PM me..
Cheers John..

The other thing to bear in mind is that it acts as a heat source, so it is less efficient to have it where the heat will be wasted. Admittedly modern boilers are better in this respect but there's still a bit of heat from the boiler and pipes to/from it which will be wasted.
