My 3ton sealey is out of favour so I thought I'd get the seals replaced.

Is it worth getting it re furbed or could I buy another new one for the same money...? I'm hearing story's of 100 sobs to refurb locally.

I take it the seals have gone (so it doesn't stay up anymore)? If so then a seal kit isn't expensive: http://www.ccw-tools.com/product.asp?strParents=&CAT_ID=1679&P_ID=32702

You'd probably also need a pair of circlip pliers, hydraulic oil and maybe fine emery cloth..

Fiddly job, though, so I guess it becomes a time vs. cost exercise - I got my 3075LE for ~£150 and the clones are cheaper still (e.g. the 'Costco jack')

I might have topped the level up, and the oil used may not have been correct. It's performance tailed off after that. Although it may have been coincidence. It stays up, but fails to lift consistently when jacking.

Not sure weather to take notice of the "do not remove" stickers on various bolts.

I guess as a first step you could try renewing the oil with the specified sealey jack oil, although if seals are contaminated that might not fix it..

That and bleed it of air, if you didn't do that when refilling?

I take it you already have the destructions & parts diagrams..

 It's been blead to death. There's squelching type noises coming from the plunger on the lifting assembly as its jacked though. Oil, can be seen oosing out. It does need seals.

Worth giving a Sealey distributor list JoB a call and see if they can get either the seal kit cheap(er than the link above) or maybe even a price on a whole replacement 'power unit'?

I would imagine it's the same cup shaped type of seal that I replaced on my trusty antique trolly jack. CaptZok showed me where to go, used to be Manchester Seals (actuall in salford  ;)) the seal itself was about £7. Result was a working jack after work provided a pop bottle full of hydraulic oil.  :y

Yep, same pop bottle supplier at my work for oil.

I'd be suprised if the type of hydrolic oil made much odds. More to do with corporate bs to get us to buy the manufacturers oil, seals and, re stickers, refurb services.

Any hydraulic will do for a jack IMHO, it's not as though it'll be working at its limits of pressure & temp  ;) ;) ;)

I would disagree TBH .. synthetic and mineral hydraulic oils are very different and react with seals in different ways .. I know of an aircraft that was "written off" after the wrong hydraulic fluid was used ... the cost of stripping down to replace every single seal throughout the complex systems was more than a new one would cost !!

If you KNOW if the original hydraulic fluid is mineral or synthetic .. then any oil from the same "stable" will probably work fine ...  just don't mix the two types ....

And given the noises described . it sounds like the two HAVE been mixed here ..  :(

But in the grand scheme of things I reckon it's no great shakes if your jack fails trying to lift your car - you don't work under a jacked up car  :y However if the seal on a plane fails mid flight ................... that's when I'd worry!  ::) ::) ::)

Having sold garage equipment for 15years before  retiring may i say that...jack sealey guarantee to supply replacement parts for 10 tears......you must use the proper jack oil.....the cost of a repair at a specialist may out weigh the cost of a new jack...depending on the model...so i personally would buy the seal kit and do it yourself...hope this helps.. :y
