Title: Owners with lowered/uprated suspension...
Post by: P6UL K on 01 May 2012, 22:22:29
Evening all,

Before i take the plunge and order up my suspension i'm wondering if those of you would kindly post up a photo of either side of your car and a brief detail of how much you have lowered your car by and what with i.e. Macpheson Struts or Coilovers, this goes for estates and saloons.

I own an estate and i'm in a quandary about how much to lower my car by.. 20, 30, 40 or even 50mm?? I don't want to go to low, but it does need lowering a bit and the shocks SO need replacing, their leaking and have definately seen better days!

Heres how my car stands currently:

Mine has been lowered prior to me getting her. I believe by 20mm, but will have to check.  If the weather stays dry long enough, I'll take some pictures tomorrow and post them :y

Mines only that low due to the overweight Officers that had abused it for years and 160k odd miles, its 'still' on the original, broken self-levelling suspension!

As promised, some pictures of my mig that is lowered....

I can't remember by how much this is lowered by, still looking, but iirc it has B4 shocks and Irmscher springs.

Now I'm not worldly experienced with cars and migs, but I must say the handling is superb compared to my previous Elite's. It goes round corners on rails without the wallowing you get with the standard Elite set up, but it's not harsh!

HTH's :y

MV6 with coilovers on.. not sure how much its lowered by, i jus did it til looked nice. The handling is changed immensely, it now corners without feeling like the wing mirrors will touch the ground  I can throw it into tight corners at a fair speed and it keeps traction...previously it would be all over the place.

As you can see the front tyres just sit nicely in the arches. The rear was lower but had to lift it slightly because i was catching on my driveway. Theres 25mm wheel spacers fitted aswell (rears werent on in those pics)

Barclay03 your car looks brilliant.

That's on 30mm Weitec springs at the front and standard CD ones at the back. Koni Sport shocks fitted all round. They weren't on the front in this picture but it made no change to the ride height.

TBH, I think all too low. Even the Irmscher 30mm drop, whilst I like the feel of it, doesn't like speed bumps, making you look a right knob.

Would he not photoshop out that awful sticker ;)

I lowered mine with apex springs that cost about £75 brand new but was overaged stock

40mm at front and 30mm at the back. not too firm or bouncy with standard shocks either. just right for me.

30mm is about the limit of std shocks, 40mm is probably asking too much

What colour is the paint, Hyper Silver or something similar, that's a lovely colour, that even my wheel refurbishment chap can't seem to do  :y.

So 30mm front and back would be ok

When you say £75 would that be for each spring ?

30mm is the max I'd like to go for UK road use, and the max I'd like to put on a newish standard shock - if shocks have covered some miles, replace them as well

I'll buy in to that.

My E36 has just undergone a 40/20 drop from stock, but it was already 15/11 lower than stock to start with.
Taking the math in to account, I have actually had a 25/9 drop from what is stock for me and the ride difference is noticeable in the fact it is slightly harsher, but it is a lot more definite in where you point it.

Although my shocks were already "sports" shocks as they are M-Sport, you can occasionally sense them getting close to the limit with the lower springs fitted so I'd agree that a 40mm drop will be a bit too much on standard shocks.

So 30mm front and back would be ok
I'd personally go for a split kit to have a slight "nose down" stance.

When you say £75 would that be for each spring ?
breakoff!!!!

I bought a complete Koni kit and had it delivered for £120 all in for the Beemer.

For pure looks, thats personal choice. Definately on the road to lead to 'interesting' handling if you're not careful.

My MV6 is nose-down, as I like my cars to handle quite 'pointy', and have constantly whinged about Omega's understeer. But it can catch you out.

Do MV6 shocks + very tired springs + 14 boxes of tiles count as lowered suspension?  :D

They arent to bad (usually found driving hard helped hit the first bump miss about 4 or 5 then land on the 6th lol), only ever had problems with speed bumps, but even they were negotiable lol
