Cheers Rob. You ever used this? If so would you recommend bearing in mind Bear doesn't have the sheets to pay for a TechII?

Only the facelift is OBDII if memory serves me, certainly PFL is not, uncertain about MFL.

The cheap computor based code readers ( often referred to as ELM327 ) are not very good .. and require a laptop as well. getting them to communicate can be a right pain.

I bought a "stand alone" one that gets its power from the car and just needs plugging in and turning on. Does the basics but only engine and a little bit of transmission.

There are "cloned" bits of kit out there but discussion of them is verbotten as they mostly breach copyright regulations.

If your car is OBDII they are a very useful piece of kit, but in no way mandatory as for all V6's there is either the paperclip or the pedal trick for reading engine codes.

An OBDII reader will only work on 3.2, 2.6 and 2.2 Omegas. :-\

I have one of these and it has worked superbly, even their cheaper versions are good for the price

As Kevin says, your 2.5 Omega is NOT OBDII complient so the Maxscan won't talk to your car, you can read your car's engine codes with a paper clip. No idea about the Focus.

so is my 2.5L both EOBD's? presumably that stands for early on board diagnostics? :)

Your 2.5 is not EOBD compliant. EOBD is the euro version of ODBII, and pretty much 100% compatible, so EOBD and OBDII can be used interchangably.

The only Omegas that are EOBD compliant are 2.2 (petrol and diesel), 2.6 and 3.2. Not sure about the 2.5DTi, suspect it is.
