What is the maximum size of tyre I can put on my 17" Elite alloys?
I am looking for a Higher profile and Wider tyre.
What's the max people have put on these alloys?
-
You want 235/45/17.
-
I will be putting 265 40 17's on my rear wheels at some point in the future. I wouldn't bother going any wider on the fronts though.
235 45 is plenty on the front

The larger the sidewall, the sloppier it gets.
If anything, you want to decrease the sidewall height (along with the increased tread width) to improve the handling.
Don't make the common mistake of "over egging" the mixture either, because it's a fine line between improvement of handling and f**king it up altogether.

After a very interesting conversation over a curry on Saturday evening I'm not sure I agree... I'll grab the popcorn and await 2woody and his fantastic explanation of how tyres work :y
-
that's just the point no-one really knows how tyres work, not even the manufacturers.
I have a mate who's got a doctorate in understanding tyres and he says we only really know 25% of it. That's why so much of tyre performance is measured rather than calculated.

To be honest, I'm trying to make the ride more comfortable, so I thought increasing the profile would make for a softer ride.
Could be wrong though.

The problem is that you'll decrease the revs per mile and increase the ride height unless you also change to a smaller size of rim.

OK, were 15 inch alloys ever fitted to an omega?
Im sure they were available for the Carlton, but can't recall seeing any for the omega facelift.
Maybe there were some for the pre-facelift?
-
Yep,pre facelift. :y
-
And the steel spare wheels on F/L's are 15" too. :y
-
Why not run 225 55 16s I run them and find them comfy enough. :y
-
Mine are 17 inch at the moment but after driving an omega that had 16 inch alloys (also with a higher profile) - I must admit it makes the ride even more comfy than with the 17s.
So I am on the look out for 16s or 15s to fit my omega with a high profile (hopefully a bit wider for more traction, but this isnt a must).

Yup, 4x 15" steelies with 195/65R15 (if memory serves) makes for an extremely comfortable ride .. and more fun handling.

As mention previously, if you are going for a higher profile, than you shouldn't be looking to go wider as well. This conbination will have the effect of greating increasing the overall rolling circumference of the tyre, which will effect the ride height, as well as your speedo accuracy, and may even cause the front tyres to catch on the arches when on a turning lock.
If however, you simple want the correct size tyres for an Omega, I have both 15" and 16" wheels in stock with good tyres. :y

when i got my mig the old boy who had it had sum m/s 185 70 15s fitted to say the journey home was very smokey due to fk all grip!! i then fitted a 225 60 15 tyre & its really comphy & doesnt tramline!! i then went to 17s with 225/45/17s all round bit hardish ride but good drive cornered well, then i went to a set of 245 40 17s big mistake!! followed every bump dip tramline inthe road motorway awfull!!
ive bared with them for 2k & put my steels back on!! drives really well again!! :)
But i think im bout to get pissed off again by fitting a set of either 235 35 19s/245 40 19s on front & 275 30 19s/275 35 19s on rear!! hope im not making a huge mistake going for looks rather than driveability!!
anything wider than a 235 on front seems to be deadly!!
(i had a set of softstar pfl elite 16s on my old saloon with 225 55 16s again drove great!!) but tyres are getting harder to souce in a good brand of tyre tho...
Have you thort of checking your tyre pressures or going for a better quality damper to make it a softer ride??
Even tyre brands differ in hardness, check your sidewall ratings close to 100 is soft upto 300/380+ is harder meaning a harder tyre firmer ride longer life, also a tyre with a rim protector has a harder ride than one without

275s on the rear? :o Why?
A 3.2 can't break traction with the standard 235s unless provoked, IME. :-\

Because thats what tyres i have already that came with alloys 235/35/19 fronts 275/30/10 rears on 8.5jx19 alloys, & in a few weeks i be getting a pair of 10" rears in the same style, but a 10" with a 235 rear be way under tyred mate need a 265 minimum for a 10j even a 235 on a 8.5" looks under tyred really... :-\
Having tyres fitted later today will try upload pix later or ask blackviper to upload them for me :y

I'm interested in this thread as I find the ride too hard on the standard low profile tyres on my 3.2 Elite on 17's. I would willingly sacrifice some roadholding for a more comfortable ride, particularly given the amount of potholes in the roads around me. :-\

Ah well, I already have a spare set of 16" wheels for my mfl TD estate, so I guess I could try them. Are there any issues I should be aware of?

None i can think of just make sure treads legal & pressures correct, tyre size should be a 225 55 16 V rated tyre for the elite

Thats what I have on my TD spare set, so very handy. :y :y :y
