Title: Small Coolant Leak
Post by: Tonka. on 17 May 2012, 20:41:54
Car has been loosing half a litre of coolant a fortnight for a while now. Parked up with a hot engine (85deg) and after about an hour a merry puddle had formed on the concrete beneath. Sweet smell, definitely  coolant!

Stuck my hand on the HBV and it is dry. No leaks there. A drip is coming from the rear of the engine.

I have heard mention of a "Coolant Bridge Pipe". Could this be the culprit?

If so, is it straight forward to replace and would I need any extra parts?

Is it on TC?

Thanks Guys  :y :y

Worth checking the pipes to/from the coolant bridge, pop the plenum off & the inlet manifold. Easier to check the pipe work  :y

I had a leaky HBV that was only loosing a small amount over a couple of weeks so it could still be that , it even looked ok when it was removed
After replacing with a new one I havent had any more coolant loss  :y

......

Have you checked the HBV for being dry at various heat settings or air/con on or off, it can make a difference as to if it's leaking.

No I haven't, but I will. Thanks  :y

Tonight the temp setting was at 25deg with the air/con off. Does this make a difference?

The vacuum operates a diaphragm which moves the valve up & down inside the HBV, it's the diaphragm that perishes and causes the leak. There's no set temp at which te valve might leak.  ;) ;)

The grey goo has had 19 hours now. Would it be okay to start the engine and fill with water?  :)

Similar question at this end too.

I sealed mine around midday yesterday and just checked and sealant that has spread out around plate edges is still slightly soft..or maybe just springy ..can,t tell.

As I don,t require the car until Monday I am going to leave it until then to hopefully fully cure although I would have expected 24 hours to be long enough

Fingers crossed the dam holds  ;D

Mines all reassembled. Compressed some goo in the vice and it, like yours, is a little soft and springy (ooh matron). Need car tomorrow though  :-\  :y
