hi all,
have been messing with the non functional S/Levelling system on my '98 MFL elite.
Story so far : compressor not switching on at all . ~Done the test with the small link arm removed from the suspension - still nothing.
Checked all around for loose connections & found that the exhaust had melted through the loom of wires from the SL switch at the back of the car. removed switch & damaged loom . Repaired all wires by carefully soldering together & insulating each one . Re fitted & connected - still nothing.
Rob G suggested the relay to the left side in cabin . Swapped as advised with the main beam relay - still no S/L but main beam will not work with S/L relay installed. Switched them back & main beam is OK again.
Looks as if S/L relay is suspect but why does it work the main beam OK. Also checked fuse 27 right at the start of this problem & is OK.
Today removed S/L pump/compressor & fed 12volts to it direct as advised by Rob G - all works fine - so not pump either.
Not too good with wiring diagrams but thought about trying find which 2 wires from the rear mounted switch if touched together would operate the compressor - if this is a possibility ?
Any help greatly appriciated :y Regards, Al :y

Could have fried the ECU as it`s in-built inside sensor box.
What colour and how many wires you got at sensor plug and do they match to corresponding connector

Same on male & female?
-
Right . 8 wires on switch side of connector ( female) but only 6 wires on compresser side of connector (male)
6 colours on male compressor side are : Brown Red yellow white Blue/Red Brown /White.
Do you need the colours from the switch side
sorry to be a total PITA :-[ :-[

right update :
Switch side connector has male pins inside has 8 wires black white/blue white green red white/red blue white/green
compressor side connector has female sockets & has 6 wires Brown red yellow White Blue/Red Brown /White
sorry for the confusion :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[

How many "pins", 4? What wires are in the female pins

How many "pins", 4? What wires are in the female pins
Sorry rob I'm being a right muppet trying to explain this to you :-[ :-[ :-[ .i'll try again
From the level sensor/switch there is a short wiring loom to a block connector. this has 8 male pins inside arranged in 2 rows . 8 wires go to this colours are : Black white/Blue White green on one side & Red white/Red Blue White/Green on the other.
the other half of the connecting block which the switch male pin one connects to has 8 female sockets inside . again in two rows of 4.
colours are : brown red yellow white blue/red brown /white
do you need to know which colours connect to each other & which 2 are not used ?
If so will have to jack up car & get under to see clearly . but can do it later today.
thanks again Al :y

Think this is a task for Kevin Wood. I`ve looked at wiring diags and can`t make out eight wires ???

Wrong level sensor switch maybe ? :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\
I'll see what other feedback we get . may go down the route of just using std shocks & do away with S/L :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\

Hi Al, I had the same on mine where the exhaust blew and melted the plug. First I knew was the relay was constantly clicking on and off. Chasing that was when I found a hole in the exhaust and that it had melted the plug. Turned out the shorted wires had indeed fried the switch although the relay was still OK. I got the wiring diag off Kevin Wood, will forward it if I can find it. I had to used a switch from a later car (mine is a pfl) so I didnt need the extra wires for the ABS/TC. Took me a bit of checking to get the correct wires as I was sure it was the switch but couldnt just plug a new one in. I checked the output of the level switch with a multi-meter as best I could ( I am no electrician) from the picture from Kevin and worked out from that that the switch wasn't giving continuity when it should. Again, if I can find the results from the old and new switch I will forward them to help you check yours. I know I kept them, just not sure where. It will be tomorrow but I will swap my 2 relays over as I am sure they are the same and check if my lights work with the s/l relay. You may have ruined both, but I only paid £20 for a s/h sensor so not too bad.
Good luck, Al

Thanks for that Al will check out your PM . Looks like another sensor & relay then. Am enquiring at the moment of how many wires & what colours are fitted to MFL sensor switches . Been under the back of the car this morning ( in between doing cam cover gaskets ::)) and now have a detailed sketch of wiring colours and what colours connect to what . turns out there are 8 wires on the sensor plug going into only 7 on the main loom connector . Yesterday I said 6 on that one but it is clearly 7.
Making some progress now ;) ;) ;) thanks to all who have responded :y :y :y :y
