Title: 2.2 estate fitted with lpg - P0170 problem code - Fuel Trim
Post by: VWSAM0 on 20 May 2012, 22:59:30
Hi all, hope you can help.

I have a 2002 2.2 auto estate cdx fitted with a Zavoli lpg kit.  Have P0170 code keep coming up.  I have read all relevent threads relating to this tricky code and will describe the fault.

I can clear the code and during approx 60 miles the spanner light illuminates twice and then the MIL light stays illuminated perminently.  Spanner light appears and goes off mainly on low revs (below 3k rpm) or tick over.

Car has been in and out of LPG fitters 4 times and have come to the conclusion it is lazy Lamba sensor on the exhaust.

This probelm only occurs on LPG, normal running on petrol is fine. LPG fitters confirm lpg system set up correctly too.

Car starts fine on the button each time with no repetative cranking required. No other codes are stored in ECU memory.  Car has had new coil pack, breathers and inlet throttle body cleaned and pipes checked for air leaks.  New exhaust in last 12 months inc cat (non Genuine) and decent spark plugs fitted. New cam sensor (Genuine VX) and checked LPG ECU set to correct lamda voltage of 5 volts.

Each time car goes in to the garage i am getting charged ££££ (still need to put food on the table for kiddies too) and before i spend anymore money i wish to get peoples opinions.

After the LPG guys diagnose and reading threads the culprit is norrowed down to I think lazy Lamda or possible MAF.  Is there anyway to make sure?

Cheers Sam

Live data via code reader will be key to diagnosing. Have they mentioned any diagnostics or fuel trim within limits?

Might be worth a trip to Brackley to see TheBoy on here for a diagnostic session with his tech2 to confirm first...?

I'll second what Chris has said and add Do Not spend any more money on it until you have had a proper diagnostic session ;)

I'm wary that it only occurs on LPG and wonder if it really is set up correctly :-\ But a proper diagnostic session with Live Data readings will confirm :y It may be a lazy Lambda ;) It could be the pattern cat ;) But it needs checking properly :y

P0170 is a fuel trim error.

Classic symptoms of a poorly mapped LPG system (or one where the fuelling has gone out due to a fault).

A lazy lambda that only plays up on LPG is, in my book, a perfectly good lambda that's being fed a duff mixture on LPG. ;)

Some live data from a Tech 2 or other code reader, both on LPG and petrol, would be useful to confirm this but it sounds to me like you need to find a better LPG specialist. ;)

Who would be the closest to me to check out the sensors and would anyone have Zavoli software avaliable to aid set up if all sensors check out ok / or recommend installer?  ::)

Thanks for the quick reply guys, I am getting to the point with the fault and hassel of dropping of the car at the garage of falling out of love with my omega ............. now we cant have that now can we!  8)

For the first part, a visit to TheBoy for a live data session on both fuels to confirm our suspicions. Then, assuming we can get the software, either Kevin Wood or myself are probably nearest.
