Hi all
Just had to change my passenger side coil pack (diagnosed as misfire) subsequently stripped out the old pack and discovered pots were full of oil and cyl 6 which my code reader identified, was the worst of all.Cleaned and reassembled the plug wells installed new coil pack,switched on ,perfect . management light extinguished no further probs.-------however!
Now for the contentious part. have done 6000mls/9mths since I had the cam cover gaskets done by professional english mechanic here on the Vendee.
All Parts sourced from UK via Andy C complete gasket kit and grease etc. not cheap but well aware of the heated debate (at times ) after Mega3.0v6 posted in April with a gasket query regarding pattern parts,
Having read the posts which emphatically advise anyone with this problem to fit genuine parts, it leaves a bitter taste in my mouth having followed all the advice, I am now over £200.00 out of pocket and from the Mega3.o6 posts I am now in danger of cooking my new coil pack if I do nothing about the gasket problem.
I am not advocating using pattern parts other than to say that even with genuine parts the job is only as good as the skill of the person doing the repair.So where does that leave me? Do I use the same guy again (would not use local French garages no dialogue and always feel ripped off,(another story concerning crankshaft sensor) or are any of you guys coming over here on holiday and fancy helping out. 5 mins away from La Garangeoire ??? ??? ??? perhaps :D and :y

If I was a betting man, I'd put money on the vital step of breather-cleaning having been omitted before fitting the new gaskets.

Sorry Abiton I cleaned out the breathers while the Guy was fitting the gaskets,in fact they were quite clean,I have had the car 4 yrs now and previous to my ownership it was a one owner car with regular oil and filter changes.I have changed the oil and filters more regular than my underwear the engine is as clean as a whistle.

To be honest not all jobs are cut and dry. It may be that the mechanic was totally methodical and particular in his work, but that something unforseen may have occured EG a damaged cover that wasn't visually easy to spot, etc etc.
Why not give the guy a shout? If that were to happen to someone I'd worked for, I would not hesitate to look at it again Free of charge - you may well find this chap would do the same?
How far are you from calais?

If my recollections are owt to go by .. he's about 400 miles from Calais .. :)
Nicer route is Brittany Ferries Portsmouth to Caen then travel south .. about 250 miles IIRC ... :)

No 1. fitting problem is over-tightening the covers and bending them clear of the gaskets. The tightening torque is just about what could be done by hand.
I'd remove and refit them properly, using the correct torque.

I'll clarify that by saying just beyond finger tight, rather than what can be done by hand by an ape swinging off a big spanner ;D

Are you advising using the same gaskets woody or new,I think I would prefer to buy new but just the gaskets.do you think I can get away with doing it that way.#
If so I,ll do the job myself this time .
Thanks guys for all your comments and advice I have completed quite a few jobs with the help of the forum over the past few years so will tackle this one in the very near future :y
