What in your opinion is best to own , i like the idea of the motorhome purely for the reason i dont fancy trying to reverse park a caravan :-[ with the motorhome you take it with you and no hitch and un hitching once your at your destination like with a caravan . Also if it was a caravan does it need to be insured by law , and what sort of price for the insurance :)
-
Motorhome. Pin a couple of scooters to the back and you have transport when you are at your destination
-
Caravan :y
You drag it to wherever you want to go.
Un hitch it and then you can use your car for site seeing and getting out and about :y
If you have a motorhome, your stuffed on that front unless you take a second car ;)

Yes thats another good point , im guessing there is a few on here with either caravan or motorhome , i know ralf has a caravan :)

motor homes have one big problem,
arive at site, lovely, set it all up put awning out tables chairs etc etc,
then if you want to visit somewhere(pub, local area of interest, car show etc etc, you have to pack it all
away to use it to get there!! sure a moped or scotter would help but if its raining then no good,
caravan arrive at site, set it all up, barbi outside awning out tables chairs etc etc,
ok we are done lets get in the car and go to the pub!!
also you have to have 2 sets of insurance 2 mot,s 2 sets of road tax, can the mrs drive the motorhome?etc etc,
we nearly bought a motor home for the 6 month tour of spain we did, even put a deposit down, then realised all the above and bought a caravan instead!!
-
caravan and you dont need insurance but i got insurance only £60 a year :y :y
-
Tent - Drive your Omega to the site at full chat, arrive, set up tent, table, chairs, etc. and you have use of your car too. ;)

See your point. Ok, a solid bar triangulated tow with a Smart on the back. Or a 1959 Mini (No MOT :y)

We did think about a tent but the malarky of setting up and no wash/toilet facility at hand put us off ... some good points raised in the for and against . £60 Thats cheap then :y

I think he was referring to the Car and the Motorhome :-\ That's how I read it because a motorhome isn't really ideal as your every day commuter ;)

Yeah, each to their own. Depends how "regular" you are, I suppose, as it's indeed a ballache if you have to "go" in the middle of the night when camping. On the other hand, camp site facilities are usually good, IMHO, and the prospect of cr@pping in a bucket in your wardrobe doesn't appeal to me that much. ;D
As to setting up, last camping trip we went on, setup was pretty quick (even with a "new to us" tent) and, after we'd finished we spent a good half hour watching the caravanners who arrived at the same time as us still trying to set up their awning. ;)
-
I guess it all depends if its touring your doing or driving to a camp site ...touring you would always be with the motorhome and not on a permanent site ... im guessing its ok to park up with a motorhome in a layby overnight :-\

Yeah, moving on every day is where I could really see a motorhome come into its' own.. and probably why they are so popular in places such as the US and Canada, where you can spend a long time enjoying a journey without ever arriving anywhere.
-
Plenty on the a43 to Northampton, not sure if there into dogging tho :D

Towing is a nasty experience though, having over a ton of weight behind you saps all the fun out of driving. Towing a caravan you get shite mpg, ugly things, environmentally unfriendly plastic tins that hold everyone up on a country lanes. Lease with a motorhome, it drives like a delivery van so no holding people up, easily get 30mpg out it. Stick some cycles on the back to explore...
Caravans you have to have stored somewhere, more cash, and at the end of the week you have to empty your own shite! Not my idea of a holiday!
Tent + 90mph cruise down to where ever. Posh it up, stay in a hotel.
-
Only just noticed this. I would go for the motorhome. It's gonna burn better cause it's got fuel in it :y

Stop messing about and buy something like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/American-Motorhome-RV-Fleetwood-Revolution-/120903745062?pt=UK_Campers_Caravans_Motorhomes&hash=item1c266cbe26

Doesn't take long. A little practice it it becomes quite easy .... until you change the towing car for one of a different length wheelbase

A caravan's got a big canister of gas though.....
sit back and wait for the bang :)

A rush being more than 50mph ::)
Tent + bike is best combination, 55mpg, zip past motorhomes, caravans the lot. Straight to front of queues, really enjoy ride there. Set up camp, and can still explore.
Spend money saved on fuel on a nice pub meal and a few beers, hoping to do a trip this week, as weather reports look good :)

Are we talking about which is easier to hit with an RPG?
Clearly, nobody in their right mind would want either, unless they are the type who enjoy just being in everyone's way.

Caravan every time.
I service, repair and install new appliances into new and old caravans and motorhomes everyday and if you've got money to burn then get a motorhome and a chauffeur, but you will have less fun than a caravan ;)
Here's why ...
With a caravan you can unhitch it from your omega , set up your awning, mini bar and barbeque then and use all the money you've saved by buying a caravan you can run and modify your mig for the rest of your life and still have change left over ;D :D :D
Enjoy !

Still disagree. Not that I've ever taken my bike camping. Even on my tod, as OOFers will vouch, I bring a car. I like a tent I can stand in, and I need a good airbed due to a somewhat 'dangle berries'ed up back

I take an air-bed on the bike, sleeping bag, little gas cooker, I take a smaller tent for speed of putting it up. I have one I can stand up in, but its just tad big, although I could take it.

No tunnie, I said a good airbed ;)
Thats before a fridge to keep my food and drink fresh, a heater for those chilly nights, a cooker than can boil more than a cup-a-soup, and a few clean cloths, and a towel to dry myself after a shower....

best thing to do is have a day out loking at motorhomes/caravans,then decide which way you want to go,also what you require it to do what extra's you want/need then check all the relevent sites, and make some offers. some dealers will do you a good deal for cash as well :y :y

Depends how old/big it is (unless you mean by fitting a mover?) ;) You couldn't push my '91 5 Berth with one hand on grass ;)
That said, reversing with a caravan/trailer isn't that hard... You just need to practice a little ;)

You can't beat a tent when in the middle of the night, the temperature drops, a howling gales gets up and it starts raining cats and dogs, you want a pee, and the toilet block is a hundred yards away across the camp site that's turned into a swamp.
Tent every time ::)
Thank goodness I've got a caravan :y
-
Unless you're going to use it a lot, I can't see the point of either!
Both have serious but entirely different downsides.
Caravans have to be towed to site, which compromises the journey there quite badly.
Motorhomes require you to pack up every time you need transport, and I cannot see the attraction of driving halfway acrosss the country just to sit on a campsite for a few days! Plus, you have another vehicle to pay for, and it's only good for sleeping in; a properly converted one is no use as a van, even if it started off as one.
Buying either isn't cheap, and you need somewhere to keep it, which is damned costly.
Surely the best way to decide if either is for you is to rent a motorhome for a few days, and use it for the sort of trip that you have in mind. Personally, when you add up all the costs and problems then hotels or decent B&Bs are the way to go.
As for camping, I hate it. That's based on several years summer holidays as a kid when it was enjoyable, and 2or 3 weekends at selected shows over the last 14 years. I only camp at those because they're normally held in the middle of nowhere, and the 'socialising' -the real reason for going- continues into the early hours and makes driving impossible.

I did see an advert to hire a motorhome and it was £350 a week , the motorhome was a good size and pretty new so i guess it would be an idea to hire one first and see how we like it . Like you say once its been bought tax and insured it will be a fair wack :y

This being just one example

Good idea. As also suggested, you need to visit various layouts of motorhome to see if you like them. You need a fairly big motorhome to give you the same amount of room inside that you would have with a caravan.

I am hoping to take my father in laws camper to France this year,we are hoping to travel around a fair bit and he offered us the chance to try it out,its a 28 foot bessacar on a 2.8td Fiat chassis.I am quite looking forward to it after many years of caravanning to see if we like it.

No,its a normal car license,28 foot sounds quite big but thats 10ft less than my disco with our caravan on the back ::)

Cant see a problem with transport from camp site if this is fitted :)

caravans are not that costly you can get them from £400 up as for storage cost nothing if you got a garden . and you cant stay in a hotel for 14 days for £200 for two people :y :y

Neither do I in the caravan ;) Just because you have a caravan doesn't mean you have to use the cassette toilet ;)
Anyway... It's an age old debate that there is no correct answer for. I prefer the caravan for some things, tent for others ;)

In addition to the differences already mentioned, caravans have an advantage on sloping and/or windy sites - such as north Scotland. Caravan has two wheels & four legs - so it's fairly easy to find a level or put one wheel on a mini ramp to get a cross-level. Then put the stabiliser legs down & you're secure.
Motorhome is on four wheels - you can spend ages trying to get it level cross ways & fore -n -aft. Then you don't get the view you want, and you're cross ways to the wind. Because you're still on suspension, it rocks around when the wind blows. And when people get in & out, etc.
But some motorhomes can be great for getting 8x4 sheets of ply home from B&Q. And going out for the day.

You can't beat a tent when in the middle of the night, the temperature drops, a howling gales gets up and it starts raining cats and dogs, you want a pee, and the toilet block is a hundred yards away across the camp site that's turned into a swamp.
Tent every time ::)
Thank goodness I've got a caravan :y
and me keep your tents to cold
Least when I get up in my tent in the morning, I don't have to empty a box of my own shite!
That would put me off my cornflakes ;D

Plastic box with a hole in the top. Starts off full of that rancid blue chemical loo stuff, then goes rapidly downhill as you use it. ;D

A more modern / acceptable version of cr4pping in a bucket. The 'bucket' bit is accessed via a door on the outside of the van, you empty it without contact with any its contents. ;) ;) :y

See that is not what I want to do on holiday, carrying a box of crap & pi$$ across a field then pouring it down drain.
None of that fuss with a tent, going by the after effects of curry I pack away you want to flush & forget! ;D

They don't force you to defecate in your caravan Student.
You could always use the same facilities as you would in a tent.

No worries with that , now with the water system do you have a decent large water storage tank and im thinking if your on a site you hook up to the water mains to keep things topped up :)

Some caravans have an onboard tank, but not all do. In general people use their aquaroll (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-x-29L-Aquaroll-water-carriers-handles-/300711717792?pt=UK_Campervan_Caravan_Accessories&hash=item4603d0aba0) and use a pump directly from it to supply the caravan, mine has an onboard tank that I fill from the aquaroll & the caravan is supplied from my tank (newer caravans with an onboard tank I think have the option of tank or aquarol).
If you have a fully services pitch, then you'll have your own water stand pipe which you can either just fill your tank or aquall roll directly from or some have a ball cock adapter that keeps a level in the aquaroll. :y
Grey water goes into either your own drain on a serviced pitch or usually into a wastemaster (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CARAVAN-MOTORHOME-38L-WASTEMASTER-WASTE-WATER-CONTAINER-/251063968999?pt=UK_Campervan_Caravan_Accessories&hash=item3a749424e7)
