Title: 2.2 CD Auto gearbox problem
Post by: Seanie OD on 22 May 2012, 17:50:12
Hi all, first time posting on the site, so I hope I do it right.

I bought an 02 plate 2.2 CD Auto the other day and while driving thought the gearbox was clunky when changing both up and down gear. Wasn't sure and was going to get around to posting on the site that very question.

Anyway, today while driving along, going up a small hill I felt what I can only describe as a gear slip (as if a manual popping into neutral). I immediately noticed that the little car warning light with the spanner in it had come on and the car had gone into limp mode. I continued driving for about 10miles to get to where I was going, but as I was nearly there I noticed that it was revving at times then jerking into gear. It got to the point where it just wasnt selecting any gear and just revving like a car in neutral.

I obviously stopped at this point, after I had finished rolling as far as I could to a safe place. I turned off the engine and restarted it to see if that might solve anything. To my surprise it got rid of the warning light but the engine was just revving no matter what gear was selected. I tried moving it through all the gears quickly a few times, when suddenly it clunked as if a gear was selected and it seemed fine again. I then drove the 4 miles further home without a hiccup.

Any ideas on the possible problems please? The car has only got 60K on the clock, but was used to tow caravans (how often I don't know), so not sure if that would cause a great deal of excess wear.

Many thanks

Thanks folks, I'll give it a check and let you know.

Auto Addict:- The light went out when I restarted it, so will it still have codes? I'm in South West Birmingham (Northfield).

How do I check for fault codes? Or is there a section here which will tell me?

Tried the pedal trick and it didn't work. I will have to get someone with a code reader to have a look.

Its a bit of a game to try and check the ATF after reading the link. As I havent got the equipment needed, is it worth getting the fluid changed regardless to be on the safe side?

i would try to get the codes read first as it could be a  waste of money, but checking the the fluid level would not hurt hth ;)
