Title: Another Merc question, Auto Gearbox
Post by: Vamps on 22 May 2012, 22:19:01
Prompted by another question........... :D :D

I want the oil changing in the gearbox on the Jeep, it a 2.7 CRD engine and auto gearbox from Mercedes, is there anything special about doing this? can my local, good all rounder independent do this or do I need a Mercedes specialist, not main dealer?

The Jeep Forum was shut down, not quite sure why..... ::) ::) ::)

If there is just a bung where there should be a dip stick it could be awkward, some of the Merc boxes are checked through the instrument cluster menu but dont think Jeep will do this

Interesting link... :y I have had a reply on the Merc Forum, not sure if mine is 4 or 5 speed, on the over ride it suggests 4 speed by saying 1234, but a reply on that link suggests it is a 5 speed, I think it is 4, must concentrate in the morning and try and count, but changes are not always so obvious...... :-\ :-\ ::) ::)

Usually caused by the o-rings in the pilot bush leaking and allowing ATF to flood the electrics. A cheap (£20 iirc) and easy problem to fix. :y

On the Thursday before Good Fri, I went to Liverpool to look at a car, liked it & put a deposit on it. On the following Tues I got a phone call to say that of all the hundreds of cars they had on site, a bloke broke into the office found & stole the key to the only R class on the compound, cropped the lock on the gates & stole 'my' car.
And now MB of Preston have had my deposit for a fortnight while the car's paperwork gets sorted out.  :(

If the numbers beside your gearstick read - 1,2,3,4,D - you have a 5 speed. ;)

Electrical and mechanical sadly so treat it with care.

I know fo many of them that start to get a rough change by about 70k miles  ???

I think you can buy a dipstick from ebay. Some members of the Merc forum made their own, if my memory serves me well. Mercedes main dealers will not sell you one. My local autobox specialist only got one from Mercs because he does so much business with them, but even then he had to beg. He reckons their customer service is absolute crap.

There is quite a lot of talk on the Merc forums about the "Valeo issue",apparently the transmission oil cooler in the rad lets go and lets coolant into the transmission on some models fitted with said radiator

From memory, its a brake band wear issue.  :y

Quite a few makes suffer the rad gearbox oil cooler issue....including the early 1.9cdti 6 speed Vec's and Signums

I called into an Independent Merc service centre, they advised gearbox oil change at 75k so having done around 77k it is time to get it done................I am not quite sure I understand the issues as there are many cars and, indeed Jeeps, running around with double that mileage. I guess like anything, look after it and service regularly.. :y
