Title: Droning noise

Different I think to the recent noise post, I have a droning noise which sounds rotational starts at about 50 mph and varies with speed. I have checked front bearings and the drivers side has a tiny bit of play. Coiuld this be my problem.

Also should add The hub on the drivers side does not seem to get any hotter than the passenger side

check tyre walls and tread ( had a sticky thing on mine made a droning sound), and pressures, also check brake pads aswell.

When you say check brake pads you mean for wear?  why would this cause a droning noise

Pure guess mate but if your pads are unable to move freely within the calliper mount and are stuck to your disc that could cause noise... i believe ;)

yes and check the wear pattern on the pads and disc. some times the sound is there all the time but not loud enough for you to hear it until you get to a certain speed or go past a wall on side there the problem is.

Personally I would check wheel bearings first, you say you have checked for play but a bearing can be noisey and have no play, see if you can pinpoint the sound to a certain side and axle on the car and go from there, spin the wheels up and listen for any noises, or remove disc and turn hub by hand to see if you can feel any notchiness in the bearing.
If all bearings check out ok I would then check for tyre noise, some tyres when they start to wear start to make a droning/wheel bearing noise, the best way to do this is use a spare set of wheels, failing that if not all the tyres are the same make/model you could swap them around on the car and see if the noise changes location.

I took the near side wheel off and found a piece of metal about 5mm square in the tread. Took this out and then took  brake pads out and  copper slipped contact edges. This seems to have made a big difference now very slight noise

:y check tyer pressure may now just be a bit low on pressure. :y
