Spent the evening at Marks yesterday, as I had started to suspect the knock was coming from the steering box.
He checked and eleiminated all of the steering components, and yes, agreed the knock was coming from the box.
Having said that, he tightened up the box mounts, and the knock didn't happen on the way home.
Will monitor over the next few days.

Box to chassis mounts? I must try that also... having very, very similar issues. When is your car produced? seeing yours is also a 2,6 as mine it could be a bunch of faulty boxes in production line as the Omega box is generally known as über-reliable... And the box mounts being a tad loose might explain why this only occurs to one direction and only when cold. Heat expands metal parts and any "loose" is tightened by heat as well as box only "moving" to one direction would give my symptoms... :-\

Chassis does corrode in that area. :(
-
Chassis mounts were not loose, but Mark was able to tighten them up a tad, and there didn't seem to be any corrosion.
As said, will monitor it.
kcl, the car is a 2003 with 76k on the clock.

Ok, that dumps my theory, my car is 2002 and some 190 000 km on the clock

Well, been out in it twice today, no knocks so far.
-
No corrosion, all very solid.
I would say that the steering box mounts were tightish but took about half to a whole turn to make very tight, easy enough to do so always worth checking in the case of future knocks around this area for others.
There is a very small amount of play in the idler and its squeeking slightly but certainly wont knock.
Changed the front pads, the wear sensor had come off and was rubbing on the alloy so that could well have been the squeek but again, wont be the cause of the knock.
The knock was the steering box area and could be heard at the very base of the steering column and also sounded like the top strutt area but also very loud in the engine bay.
I guess its a case of see how it goes.

Yup, thanks for your help last night :y

Still no problems, tightening up the mounts appears to have done the trick :y

Ok, might be worth a further inspection in that area then when we next meet

Same year as ours and very similar miles and a knock on steering, a single knock and not all the time, I don't drive it enough to have any other clues.... :( :(

I'm enjoying driving it again :y

Day 3, and still no problems.
Who'd have thought it was something as simple as that.

Did suggest that on another thread, but only after Mark counted out the top mounts as we originally suspected when standing by the side of the car and turning the steering wheel. It was defo coming from the top of the wheel arch, as you heard yourself. So if not top mounts, I guess that was the next place to look.
To me it was always a creak, rather than a knock. ...tbh. But then I only heard it that one day. Is the back more settled now with new donuts?

It was both.
Rear donuts weren't changed, rear of front wishbone bushes were.
