Title: The parting of the ways.
Post by: GaryBC on 25 May 2012, 08:47:23
The time has come for me and the old girl to go our separate ways. We've been together for twelve years, and she's taken me over 200 thousand trouble-free miles but the end is nigh!

I'd like to retire her to a good home if possible so I'd like some views please on what sort of value - if any - she may have, and the best way to pass her on.

What's brought this on? She recently developed a slight early morning engine rattle and has been losing and/or consuming oil for a few months now. Last night, as the final decider, the oil pressure light started flickering at idle.

She sailed through an MoT last month with just an advisory for both wishbone bushes. I was going to fix them and see if I could get another year out of her but the low oil pressure has but the kybosh on that. Other than the engine and bushes she's a very sound car - even the aircon still works perfectly!

So, bottom line: does she have any monetary value? If so, where's a good place to advertise her (I can't here as I don't have enough posts)? Anything you want to know either reply here or pm me.

Cheers,
Gaz

Wouldn,t it be worth dropping the oil and giving her a full oil change and seeing if that prolongs her life .?

You have enough posts to sell here, so no need for thinly disguised adverts :P ;D

Sadly, its value is quite low - its got a lot of miles on it, and clearly has an oil pressure issue.  If it's a high spec car, ie Elite, it may have value for being broken...

That might put the light out for a while, but it's not going to solve the problem.

Bugger, you caught me!  ;D

To be honest I'd almost rather give it away (well, gimme a score for the fuel in the tank!) to someone who might want a donor car for some project or other - rather than see it crushed.

I'll craft an ad and see what I get.

Thanks

If the car still has some life left in her and you obviously have given it many years TLC wouldn,t it be worth getting and external gauge and having the oil pressures read at cold and hot...might be something quite fixable...maybe even a ltr of thicker oil might help out STP or similar .

Worth a try IMHO  :y

Worth a little investigation before you write it off, as said. Could just be a blocked oil strainer in the sump although at 200k it could well be wear. A peek at a couple of the bearings while the sump is off would tell you one way of the other.

If the rest of the car's tidy and the engine's worn for a couple of hundred quid you could drop a 2nd hand donk in.

I have a very similar situation with my Elite.Internally it is immaculate .Externally she has a few bits of just especially around the rear arches but at 14 years old and 205 k I thing she is entitled to be showing her age.

My engine makes a few rough noises on cold start, although alot better since I replaced the drivers side exhaust manifold gaske t last week/fitted new thermostat and oli cooler but as parts tend to be reasonably cheap keeping her going is the better choice of the 2 evils.

Give her a good look over, check the oil pick-up and strainer ,as suggested by Kevin, as sump gaskets are also not expensive and for a few quid spent you may well get another 12 or more months pleasurable use ....assuming you have not already decided to pass the old girl over  :'(

This reminds me. I was supposed to put an oil pressure gauge on the MV6 after it started making worrying noises when cold, and also when driving fairly enthusiastically about 2 years ago.

Well, I have a gauge in the garage, thats about as far as it got ;D

Dropping the sump is not a job I'd attempt lying on my back with the car on a couple of axle stands! A few years ago maybe - but not any more!
