Title: 3.2 Idle RPM
Post by: Shackeng on 25 May 2012, 14:14:38
It may be in the maintenance section but if so I can't find how to set the idle on my 2001 3.2 . I've just completed a cambelt and thermostat change, engine runs fine except the idle when warm is only 550 (what should it be?) and a little lumpy, I can't remember what it was before, but it was smoother, and I would welcome guidance. TIA :y

Don't think you can change idle manually on drive by wire engines. I think it's ecu controlled.  :-\ Probably can with Tech 2. My 3.2 idles at about 550rpm.

you shouldnt ever need to play with the idle...with everything connected properly and no air leaks, it will be correct.

worth checking for codes, and all pipes connected, and spray some carb cleaner around the engine listening for a change of note.

Thanks guys, I'll do that JB, no hissing at present and, I think, all vac pipes correctly fitted. :y

DBW idle can be a bit lumpy tbh. But it might be woth a look at the coil pacs. See if they are cracked or swollen, or any oil or water(residue) in the plug wells. And check plug service history, condition, and tightness as they do work loose signified by soot around the base. 25nm, let them settle, then re tighten.

About 550 rpm is normal, and IME ac on or off does not make as marked a difference as It does on the 2.5 or 3.0. Possibly due to the previously mentioned ecu controlled idle, if that info is correct???

Coil packs look OK, but will check the plugs. Seems better since I changed the oil this afternoon. ??? :y :y :y

I find the DBW V6 idle shit really, my 2.2 is silky smooth at idle. The 3.2 is rough as the eurzone crisis. It's bloody awful!

Luckily power overrides everything else but, idle, maintaince is a bitch. Overall I still prefer my 2.2!

As others have said, 550-600 rpm is about right, AC on or off.

Can be a bit lumpy, cleaning the TBs, breathers and vac can help, but will never be as stable as the far superior (:P) earlier engines

After changing the plugs yesterday, which seemed to be the original fit, (although they were Bosch :-\), and fitting new GM plugs, the road test after all the work done, including cambelt and 'stat change, was excellent, and idle RPM now very smooth at 550. :y
