Title: iPhone Q
Post by: hotel21 on 27 May 2012, 20:27:11
Was down the beach today for a walk and a paddle with the wife and our dog and, whilst jumping around playing with the dog, the 'phone fell out my pocket and landed on damp sand.  Face down.  Not in a puddle or anything like it, just damp sand.  Picked it up in double quick time, wiped it down and put it back in my pocket, thinking no more of it.

Now, some 4 hours later, it appears to be self destructing and going into voice control of its own volition, playing iTunes and auto dialling random numbers from the contacts list.

Bit of googling shows that all functions originate from the home button so guessing some damp got in there.

Switch it off, place in the sun to let it dry or get onto Voda in the morning and see what the insurance says??

I'd buy a handset that can withstand minor drops/knocks, but in your case the best advice I can offer is to power it down and leave it in the airing cupboard for a couple of days.

Was my intention to shut the fekker down in any event as there are some contacts on there that I would rather not speak to in too much of a hurry, especially if I am at home.....  :-X

Given the current weather, I think the window sill is a whole lot hotter that my airing cupboard, but thanks for the confirmation!!   ;D   :y

I've heard a few say that putting the phone into a bag of rice for a day or so will draw out the moisture.
Normally I'd say pull the battery first but crapple won't let you do that.

The concern will be with respect to the additional damge that salt water does......here's hoping.

haven't they learned to seal them yet ?. A simple sheet of plastic would probably do. A cheap $5 watch from china is sealed against water, why not a £300 phone ?.

Just seen this http://phandroid.com/2012/05/27/i-can-confirm-rice-does-heal-water-damaged-cellphones/ (http://phandroid.com/2012/05/27/i-can-confirm-rice-does-heal-water-damaged-cellphones/)
Seems he had a good result with a jar of rice.

Seems to running fine now. Not much heat in the airing cupboard this weather but left it switched off and leaning against an east facing upstairs window so as soon as the sun started to split the sky it got heated. It switched in fine and has been well behaved all day so here's hoping.

Thanks all for the info though.

Think with this phone your warranty will now be invalid, if it was still under warranty. Don't iphones have the built in moisture sensor ?

Seems pretty common to put moisture sensitive stickers in phones nowadays. They turn pink when they detect moisture.

Yup, two IIRC - one in the headphone socket and one inside on the main board.

4 - headphone socket, charger socket and 2 internal. IIRC, at least 2 need to fire, including at least 1 internal one, to invalidate warranty.

Its on a contract with insurance and I'm due an upgrade in a couple of months so I'll just play it by ear and see what happens.  So far so good today though....  :-\   :)

You need more than heat to rid the phone of moisture as the water will often just condense on the inside of the phone delaying the problems and sometimes making them worse.

The airing cupboard, if warm, is great because it is very very dry and draws the moisture out.  Similar to the way rice would.

My worry would be salt too as it will lurk until it gets damp again, such as in your pocket, it could again just delay problems.

Rinsing with 70% alcohol will flush out the crap, wipe it down as best you can once it has evaporated and leave it in the airing cupboard for a couple of days.

And like others have said, then buy a real phone  ;D
