Can they do that ?? I thought there were laws to stop that sort of thing ???

Company loyalty, don't think there is such a thing these days. :'( That's horrible to hear, hope things brighten up for you soon.
As Marie said - mileage, condition, MOT, tax, air con, tc, gadgets etc?

they can in certain circumstances, but the way they are going about it ,i think they will be on thin ice and i will go to court.

Good ... folks like that deserve everything they get.
There are better ways to do things. Mate of mine was diagnosed MS 8 years ago, he is now very much wheelchair bound, and has little movement in one arm. What he does in his electric go-kart and the one working arm is amazing !!
Anyhow, the work the company did was amazing, ramp to a widened external door, new disabled toilet downstairs, widened internal doors into the 3 rooms he requires access to, and because the canteen is inaccessible by wheelchair, he has his own coffee machine installed in his office.
So it can be done.....
fight 'em I say :)

cheers entwood, nice to have a bit of support.feeling a bit shellshocked at the moment :y

the story is,i had a bike accident in 76 which among other things did a lot of damage to my right knee and lower leg.i have a dropped foot which is permanent, and now my knee is almost worn out (as well as cruciate ligament being knackered )but the docs would like me to stay of my feet as much as poss.to postpone as long as poss.a knee replacement.my job is quite physical (making prestressed concrete floors)and my doctor asked the employer a year ago to transfer me to a less physical job.they promised me a different job but then cancelled because work was getting a bit slow, and when i got home from work today a letter had been delivered telling me that as i am incapaple of doing my job and they dont have another job for me they are contemplating dismissing me,and i am invited to a capability hearing on thurs. to discuss the matter.they didnt have the balls to give me the letter at work or look me in the eye and tell me to my face, they had to send it in the post, and as im sure you can imagine after 20 years of service that stings a bit. >:( i am not going in tomorrow i am starting to look into the legal side of things.

good idea to seek legal advice .Things aren't the same anymore . Id take representation to the meeting at work too . your local disability group should be able to provide you with people to help . Could you let me know how you get on

Hmmm work a bit slow, so they decide you can't do your job anymore.
Have you had a lot of time off with your condition, do you struggle to do the job or are we just looking for a cheap way out of a redundancy situation?
As you say you need legal advice, if youre in a union get them involved pronto, otherwise citizens advice would be an option.
See if someone from the citizens advice can accompany you at the hearing, if not take someone with you who can take notes on your behalf. Never trust the company's scribe to get the full picture.
Remember if this ends up in a tribunal accurate notes are essential to show how the employer acted towards your disability.

I damaged my left knee when I was 20 it is normally OK but I cannot drive a manual in bad traffic now.
About 8 years ago I snapped a ligament in my left ankle - let it heal naturally - took 6 years.
Guess who is staying with autos to make sure their leg lasts.

i do struggle to do the job now,its a non union firm(i was a t&g shop steward at my previous job) i have had very little time off sick its not my style,i suspect they may be planning to close the site (they have jettisoned a lot of long standing managers recently)so they may be trying to save on redundancy payments.thanks for the advice very helpful :y
