Normal sort of price for a car in the Ukraine. My omega would cost €12,000 in import duties, if I imported it, but its not allowed anyway as the steering wheel has to be on the left.
Many of the Oligarchies is the Ukraine are our equivalent of MPs and own the car factories, so it is in their interests to keep import duties high and local sales of Ladas going.
Daewoo and Chevolet invested in new factories in the Ukraine about 10 years a go and import restrictions, through high import taxes were part of the deal. These are the most modern cars made in the Ukraine. Most manufacturers, have got round some of the restrictions by importing "Kit Cars", with local assembly. This involves fitting the seats and a few other parts. Chinese cars and mopeds are quite popular because of their prices and not their build quality.
Ukraine is a poor country compared with the UK with a minimum wage of £75 / mth and an average wage outside of the top 5 cities of £200 / mth. But there is a shortage of cars, especially western cars hence the price. You cannot buy anything for less than $2000 (£1,300), not even a 35 year old Lada with 400,000km on the clock! I know this from where I've compiled a list for my brother in law, a few weeks ago, where he has $2500-3000 dollars to spend on a car, the only ones I could find were 1985-1990 Ladas.
Car prices are at least 4 times more than UK prices. Omega's are classed as an executive car, hence the price.
As cars are expensive in the Ukraine, but they are generally very well looked after, as an owners pride an joy.

That would make sense, as the Omega could be described as a 'disposable' car, ie buy one, run for a year or two and then buy another rather than fix, sad but true..... :)

When I move out there, I've got no choice but to pay the local prices! :( But I will soon get it back with petrol and diesel at £3 a gallon, and no council tax on the house. :y :y :y
I'm going to be looking at a Ford Galaxy diesel, for make trips back to the UK 3 or 4 times a year. With a 70l tank and about 1200-1300 miles from the Ukraine border to the UK @50mpg, it will be a cheap journey to the UK on £3 diesel, and an expensive trip back! From Sandhurst to Talne is about 1650 miles.

not if you fill couple 5 gallon drums before you leave and put in tank for return journey rod lol
