Title: Key fob has stopped working
Post by: PAULCDX on 19 June 2012, 16:56:27
Hi Guy's

After the car has been sitting on the drive for a month or so she was finally started up and was left running today.. All is fine on that front  :y

Only prob I have now is my one and only key seems to have stopped responding to the car? I can't lock, open or open the boot?

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance  :y

Paul

Can't see that little red light on the fob when I press the buttons so I guess changing the battery will be a good start  ;D  ::)

Thought the key may have gone out of sync with the car as it hasn't been used for two months or so........ Had kept the car unlcoked whilst the battery was dead etc..........

if the bat has died then it will need a re-sync anyway. as said, key in ignition, doors closed, press & hold button, locks close then re-open. if i remember right.  :y

Cheers Jon,  I do remember it working a few days ago but since then perhaps the battery has died  :o

Will get it changed and then try and re- sync to the car  :y

Thanks  :y

Tried to reply a moment ago but for some reason the post did not work. I have recently replaced my key fobs. The originals were shot, both batteries and buttons. The new fobs needed recoding to the ECU (computer chip). The dealers like this work! If the ECU still 'remembers' your fob after a battery failure/replacement you may be able to recode it as per one of the previous threads (position 2 and press a remote button) detailed in the owners manual. You can use the key alone in certain models but you need to unlock, re-lock and re-unlock in sequence in a matter of a few seconds to prevent the alarm activating. Annoying for the neighbours a t 7am if you continually get it wrong. I've sorted mine now so come back if you are stuck.

Am I right in thinking if I leave the car unlocked at the mo until I get the battery changed ( cos I need to buy one ) I'm not going to be causing any alarms or powersounder to go off?

Can I still drive the car if I need to? Sorry for the stupid questions  :D  :D  ;D

Once I change the battery, will I just need to re - sync to the car and all should work?

Thanks for all your help  :y

Tend to give you the little warning chirps..................ignore at your peril

Ummm I certainly won't be ignoring that then.

Once the battery is changed and hopefully fob working, will any alarms go off or anything need re-setting, sorry if I'm being stupid  :D  ;D

From my experience, and it looks like your model is only a few months from mine you should be able to sort it from the details posted (hopefully). If the buttons on your remote are ok and you replace the battery (if that is the issue) you may get away with the VX instructions, position 2 etc. If you do that's great news. No problem with driving it, locking and unlocking manually and don't worry about the alarms, they wil be completely normal after you've sorted the issue. My comment re the alarms is that on our models, if you unlock using the key, if you are not expert at the timing (done it loads of times) the alarm will go off every time you open it! Cheers.

Also, I meant to say, there is a manual boot release handle. If you've not needed it before, you can find it by going into the back seat, kerb side, drop the seat and reach in. It is a pull cord (with handle) mounted on the underneath side of the boot lid. Hope this helps!

Battery has now been changed and the key still won't work  >:(

I've tried the re-sync and still no buttons work etc...........

Do possibly have a faulty fob or could there be a blown fuse in the car that works the key etc?

Thanks

Paul  :y

So shall I try changing this Rob and then see how I get on? Should my key be working the boot with this fuse?

Will prob just send Key to Martin and see if it's gone faulty etc......

Try fuse as first port of call but as Jon says, could be a dicky PCB/battery carrier or microswitch. Split the fob, have a gander, then try pressing the microswitch/es without the fob cover attached.

I don't think it is down to fuses, but thats only my spin. When you take the key fob apart, what condition are the buttons in. Do they still have rubber 'pushes'. When they really wear out, they drop off and that's just about the end of it! The VX instructions do say that after a short period of time, if the battery is not replaced then re-coding may be necessary. It's worth sorting out though. If you use a vauxhall dealer you will need the car pass. The code they need is on there. If you don't have a car pass then they can get it for you but unfortunately you have to pay for that service! If the buttons are wrecked, You're really stuffed because when your new fob arrives it will almost certainly need reprogramming to your car! Not the end of the world though. Hope you sort it!

You get a member on here (Martin Imber) to replace them, simples :y

Just find it strange how it worked the other week and now it has stopped?

Wouldn't be down to us messing with the interior / door cards being changed etc?

Car was been left unlocked for weeks cos the battery died in the car and was left on the drive. Today car was jump started and all was fine on that front until I came to try and lock the car?

Any coincidences here??

Either way I will now send the Key to Martin to check over.  :y

Banging on about it I know but the key fobs and batteries do wear out so that's probably it in combination. Our member might have a value solution! Unfortunately I used the dealer (don't use them for anything else other than genuine parts - but they are happy with that). But you'll be well happy once it is sorted.

Cheers JA

Chances are the battery holder inside the keyfob is becoming detached from the circuit board, very common with Vx. keys, usual trick is a folded up square of card inserted inside the fob between the battery and case.

As said above, try using the fob without it's case but press the battery whilst operating the button, that should get the red light on the fob working...

A few facts here for people.

The remotes are coded to the central door locking ecu or intruder alarm ecu (if alarm fitted) on the Omega. The ECU stores the specific codes of the remotes and hence there is no need to re-program them to the ecu IF the same remote is being used although it may need re-syncing.

In addition to this, the transponder chip is coded to the immobiliser ecu and works in the same way.

This is true for all the Vx remotes (although the likes of the Vectra C etc has an integrated immobiliser chip and not a seperate item plus they program into the CIM using a single command). The only time I have seen a second hand remote fail to program is when the wrong remote was sourced (there are quite a few different versions).

The older remotes (such as used on the Omega) can suffer from the battery holder becoming detached from the circuit board, if your good at soldering, this is an easy fix. Other failues can be the switches becoming worn (more so on facelift remotes) but again, these can be replaced plus the casings can become worn but repalcement items are now available online. If you put your time into repairing your existing remote then no re-coding is required.

I have the same problem with my central locking it does not work by the key

I have a new spare key coded to the car and that does not make it work neither

Michael, does it work by the key in the lock and not work by the (remote) fob, not sure from the message but I am suffering man flu so sorry if I'm not quite right today!

The problem with my C L is that it works when it wants

key in lock then turn and only opens the drivers door   pressing the remote does nothing

then sometimes it all works as it should   locking all doors with remote   and by putting the key in the lock opens all doors

Update -

Key has come back from Martin and has been repaired and a new case and switches fitted  :y

The key is like brand new and is now paired up and working to the car  :o

A huge big thanks to Martin for his efforts  ;)  :y
