Title: Part Identification: electric pump?
Post by: PLANETNZ on 19 June 2012, 19:39:57
Hi Guys. im actually getting this bloody thing sorted but last night doing a general serch for vacuum leaks i found what i guess is some sort of pump on the drivers side inner guard not far from the EGR valve. its about 4 inches long with 2 water - heater hoses coming out of the end and a standard electrical connector on the other....that wasnt connected!  what the hell is it?? thanks for the help, cheers!

Aux waterpump. If you press the auto button after switching off, your heating system will keep the interior warm until the block cools. Waste of time IMHO. If it concerns you, remove it and join the 2 hoses.

Everyday a school day - I've also always wondered what that was  :(. I wondered if it was some sort of pre-heater for clearing the screen whilst the engine was still cold - hey ho - thanks for that  :y :y

cheers
Ian.

Granadas and Sierras have an electric heating element in the heater box just in front of(or behind, can't remember which) to do just that.
Needless to say, it's about as useful as the Omega's auxiliary water pump.
Where Fords score really well is the quickclear windscreens, which are effective.

it's a bit more fundamental than that - it's a pump to pump coolant through the heater at all times when the engine is running - thus making the heater much warmer. It also has the function mentioned above.
