Title: Best way to syphon fuel
Post by: Omega 37 on 27 June 2012, 09:59:20
Scrapping my old MIG but there was 3/4 of a tank of fuel when the engine blew!!!!!! :'(

Tried sucking on a hosepipe but it nearly killed me  :( Can I transfer the fuel directly into the new MIGGY????????
cheers Paul

You could access the tank from under the back seat (saloon) where the sender unit lives, & syphon/pump it out from there. If you're scrapping it though, a screw driver through the bottom of the plastic tank should do it!  ::) ::)

Disconnect the fuel line from the throttle, then put 12v to the pump?

Will take a while, but if you extend the fuel line with an extra piece of tubing, you could pump it straight into the other car's fuel cap.

I've done it with a diesel mondeo, unsure about safety aspect with petrol.
You might need to earth both cars (connect -ve battery terminals with a jump lead?)
Can't be much worse than screwdriver into tank, then trying to catch 50 litres of fuel - do you have a container big enough which will fit under a mig?

Yep, bit of rubber hose into another car's tank, then fire up the fuel pump. By far the safest way to do it, IMHO. It doesn't take that long, either. 5 or 10 minutes will see it empty.

Just be sure to keep any sparks away from fuel vapour. Do it outside. Connect the fuel at the rear of the car at the top of the fuel tank, connect the electrics at the front of the car (or just remove the lid from the fuel pump relay and press the contacts together. :y

The way I do it is. In the boot under the carpet is a circular plate with 4 screws holding it down, remove that then you'll see the cover for the fuel pump/fuel pick up, remove that and there's easy access into the tank. I jack the passenger side rear up to get every last bit out, its expensive you know ::) ;D

I used to remove the tank from the vehicle then pour it out!
Now I tend to cut the fuel line under the vehicle near the rear and then bridge the relay contacts in the relay box under the bonnet, depends on how much of your car you have already stripped.

I will try to find the relay & pump it into to the other MIG
cheers

Dealing with this sort of thing all the time ::)

Be very careful ;) I would take the plate off under the seats, disconnect the feed line to the engine and put a suitably long bit of hose on to pump it straight into the other car, then just power up the pump at the relay as suggested. Be very careful not to create a spark ;)

Never tried it on a petrol tank, but aquarium shops sell manual siphon/pump devices for emptying out fish tanks.  A mouthful of fishtank water must rank alongside a mouthful of petrol as things you never want to try...

I've had my fuel syphoned twice, if I ever catch up with the bastard who did it I will ask them their technique.

Can you remember the Redex shot each time you filled up A fill up then probably cost a fiver and I believe the shot was a penny.

I think it was a shilling, not a penny.  Even then, nothing connected with cars cost a penny.
