Title: Gold star for lovetyres.com
Post by: Field Marshal Dr. Opti on 28 June 2012, 10:47:40
Further to my tyre thread.

I ordered four Goodyear Eagle F1 asymmetric 2 tyres at 3.30 yesterday afternoon. They arrived at just gone eight this morning. :y

They look huge for a 235 tyre. The way the rim protector is designed makes it difficult to kerb the alloys (I think) :y

I now have two questions.

1. How much should I expect to pay to have the tyres fitted and balanced?

2. Should I give the job to the  pubescent neanderthal knuckledraggers who work at Kwik Fit?.

I would guess at about the following:

Tyre disposal: £1.50
Valve: £1
Balancing: £3.00
Fitting: £2.50

So about £8 plus the Vodka And Tonic.

Note: The above is a guide price only  :y

Thanks, Mark.

Mrs Opti wishes to make a garden feature with the old tyres, so that should save me six notes. :y

They charge around £15 per tyre around these parts, which is why I fit my own. :)

Yep. Just phoned Kwik Fit. They want £15 a corner, or £13.50 if I take away the old tyres. Crazy money to pay for some acne-scarred youth to butcher my pride and joy. :( :(

Place wheel on sheet of plywood. 6 foot length of 4x2 running from ground level up onto the tyre just shy of the rim.Drive vehicle up the length of wood to break the bead. Turn wheel over and repeat.Lever off tyre.Lever on new tyre.Simples. :)

Find somewhere that isn't a big chain like Kwik Fit - I can get them done (inc. disposal!) for a tenner a corner around here, and that was without even trying.. and everything is meant to be more expensive down south ;)

P.S. Walk in when they're quiet, don't call, and offer notes.

Opti, have them fit and balanced by someone who knows the job imo..

the first shop (who sell me the tires) have no clue about balancing.. they used 40-50 grs :o

later I had them balanced by a pro , which turned the tires and fit them correctly.. and the balance weights dropped to 15-20 grs  :y

This is the way to go, try and get down either mid morning or mid afternoon, find an independent place, ask them about fitting while holding some cash  ;)

Avoid the big franchises. But on the other hand, you want a company with decent kit.

5 stud balancer is a good sign. But then I have trouble getting wheels balanced to an eccptable level with the normal kit for some reason.

Not sure why, but Omega seems really prone to balancing.  Balancing alone around these parts is around £9 per wheel at the only places that seem to be able to do it properly.

For this reason, I tend to get my tyres from WIM/Blackboots if they are competitive, as their balancing is always spot on IME. Although I usually need tyres annually, and like to get the geo reset annually, so its not an 'extra' trip

Just booked the MV6 in at my local Vauxhall dealer for next Wednesday to have my new tyres fitted.

They initially wanted to charge for one hour of  labour.....  £65 plus VAT......Total £78

After pleading poverty we agreed on £10 per wheel.........  £40 plus VAT......Total £48

Still pricey.... :-[ But cheaper than Kwik Fit who wanted £60. :-\ :-\
