Advice needed as to what make of shocks would be best to be fitted to the rear suspension bearing in mind that cost is an issue? The car is a September 2000 reg 2.2 petrol Elegance.

Elegance is not a spec we get in the UK, so not sure if it has self levelling?
Either way, GM on trade are good value. Around £75 pair for normal, £130 self levellers.

GM are reasonable value but there are other, cheaper options that are as good (if not Self Levelling) ;)
I'd recommend sticking to a known brand though ;)

Not sure if Tradeclub is available in Ireland.
I quite like Bilstein B4, which is supposed to be a direct replacement, although IME, it provides a slightly firmer ride over standard.

The car has self levelling suspension. The elegance is the same as a cdx

CDX in UK does not have Self Levelling ;)
Only Elite models have them factory fit :y

Unfortunately, for direct replacement, GM is the only source. If no TC in Ireland it might be worth contacting andyc at Drive ;)
Alternatively it's replace both shocks and springs ;)

GAS or OIL shocks for a standard saloon ? :-\
-
Both have fluid, level is adjusted with air on S/L :y

GAS shocks on mig, avoid oil shocks (ok for a smalll box but not for a mig) gas are standard.
2.2 with a SL seems strange to me, never heard off a 2.2 with self leveling even Opel didn't have them (at least never seen it on an Opel)

It does not have self levelling suspension. Got confused with self levelling system for the headlights.

Contact AndyC here, he is a parts Manager at a Vauxhall dealer. Looking at around £75 ish for pair of standard shocks :y
