Title: Tyre width.
Post by: Field Marshal Dr. Opti on 02 July 2012, 19:58:27
Placed my soon to be fitted Goodyear Eagle F1 Asy 2 against the Michelin Primacy still fitted to my MV6......and it's a good inch wider.

Both tyres are 235/45/17. How is this possible?.........or optical illusion?

Need to be a bit careful, if on standard 17" rims, as there isn't masses of clearance between tyre and strut...  ...about half an inch.

Thanks, TB. They're going on at three tomorrow. I'll ask the fitter to check. :y

wont be a problem.. standard 225/55-16 is a larger tire..

Specification       Sidewall  Radius       Diameter   Circumference    Revs/km      Difference
225/55-16         124mm   327mm     654mm         2054mm            487        0.0%
235/45-17         106mm   322mm     643mm         2021mm            495       -1.6%

Nope, diameter is not relevent in this case - if the tyre is too wide, the sidewall will foul the strut.

Go look at yours, the bit of the strut it fouls is the cup at the bottom of the spring :)

So a "fat" 235 tyre should be okay. I thought that all 235 tyres were exactly the same width. I was wrong... :-[ :-[ for the first time since 1974  I was wrong. ::) ::) :y

I think they'll fit just fine. :y

My Dunlops have about half an inch between tyre and strut :). So it depends where it's 'fat'.  Sure H21 uses those tyres, so you should be OK :y
