Title: My first go at a new shed
Post by: venom on 02 July 2012, 21:28:24
I thought I'd already posted the start of my shed but can't find it  :-\ :-\

Well last year I decided to have a go at building a new shed myself from scratch which if you knew how bad I'm at DIY you would be wetting yourself with laughter.

So found a secondhand wood supplier in Didcot & got the basics for the frame & had a go at it.

Then I found a company that make big posh summer houses & they said I could help myself to all of their off cuts & scrap wood for free, so all the T&G & the odd bits of 3x2, 4x2.

Then had to leave it for a while as our son has mental health problems & has been in & out of hospital a lot over the last few months so could only do work on it as & when.
But lately I needed something to do as I found things getting on top of me so cracked on with it & now it's almost done.

Looks great .... but that's a house, not a shed.

Have to say, you have a good collection of tools for someone who says he is crap at DIY.

They are bits that I've needed to get while building it as I didn't have any DIY related tools only mechanical tools for working on cars & got 99% of them at silly low prices from Gumtree,eBay & Freecycle

Did all my homework first by asking all my neighbors that it would effect first if they would mind, then got pre planning approval from my local council & the OK from our Housing association.

 ;D

Nice construction , i built mine out of reclaimed freebie wood and pallet boxes . Think how much that would cost if bought ready made  :o Well done it looks great and good enough to live in  :y

Ready made sheds are seriously expensive now :( And flimsy! I wonder how much it would cost to make something like the one shown here, without using reclaimed wood? Anyone care to estimate?

I wouldnt buy a ready made one for the reason you say "flimsy" , i put an estimate of around £3k maybe more for something similar in size for that shed ready made . My dad had a 6x8 ready made shed a month ago and it cost £800 ..its very flimsy , swinging a cat inside is not an option  ;D

Indeed - I really need to build a workshop on the side of the garage to house the ever growing array of tools (like the lathe) and get them out of the garage .. but a ready built will cost me a fortune.

Perhaps I should try and price building one like this :)

Well I didn't work out how much it cost, but I reckon around £500 at the mo with reclaimed wood, screws, nails & roofing felt.

Damn sight cheaper than a ready made one, that's for sure! Probably double the cost using new materials everywhere, mind.. still a lot cheaper, though.

Bah! Distraction. Hurry up and get the snake built. ;)

;D Well, first I do need to do some woodwork - the body is squatting in all the free space and it's impossible to move without three or four people and/or a crane.. so I need to build some huge wooden wheeled trolleys, preferably (headroom allowing) ones that let me store the body 'over' the chassis.

I do have a Jag diff in bits on the workbench, though. By gods that stank when I opened it! I thought 15 year old gearbox oil was bad, but 30+ year old diff oil takes the biscuit..

I suspended my bodywork from the ceiling to keep it out of the way. Then again, there wasn't much of it. ;D

;D Mine weighs more than the chassis did - I think it'd pull the roof down! With the two guys from Dax and me (one at the back, two at the front) we could only just carry it into the garage - I had to balance the arch on my shoulder to manage that, too ;D

Built mine about 10 years ago 22ft by 18ft  insulated plasterboarded and carpet cost me just over 3k.. Lost it now 14year old as taken it for her den. its now pink with rugs and tv etc. Iam now stuck with a 10ft by 6ft shed in the back garden.
