Title: 2.2 DTI *Turbo* need help
Post by: maskedpump on 06 July 2012, 19:47:50
Hey guys and girls! So my turbo on my 2.2 DTI is about to go *kaboom*. Not literally but its going to die soon.

I cannot find any cheap replacements and thought to myself "if I'm going to change the turbo, is there another turbo that will work on my engine?"

If its possible I'm looking for more power, I'm 21, self explanatory

If anybody could help me I would be extremely grateful.

The turbo is howling, like someone screaming under my bonnet and its definitely commingle from the turbo. A mechanic told me its called howling turbo which means its on its way out. Plus I've lost 40% of all power especially at lower revs

I'm hoping you're going to tell me its not on its way out  :y

More power can be obtained from removing the cat (not required on diesels), remove the first exhaust muffler after the cat & get a re-map :y
One more thing. A larger intercooler can't be easily fitted, but the one you have sits behind the radiator & A/C condensor. Raise it up just above these for more air flow (don't worry about bonnet clearance as long as you don't raise too far above the rad, but check before you slam your bonnet down). I've made some plates out of Ali to direct the air up to the intercooler. This makes quite a difference at higher speeds :y :y

AET Turbos and Turbo Technics can recondition the turbo and/or convert it to a hybrid turbo. Get rid of all the boxes in the exhaust apart from a backbox and remap it!

All of your replies are brilliant, however. Still not completely sure if it is my turbo going nuts or a boost leak or something  :-\

Sounds like bearings on the way out in the turbo to me if it's howling. A boost leak would sound like a hiss and you'd be getting a fair bit of black smoke out the back.
