Title: cat removale
Post by: pirate on 06 July 2012, 19:52:34
prob been asked before but im changing the exhaust on the steinmetz having one built from cats back but im thinking these pre face lifts can run without cats ?its a 2.5 at the moment but in the winter a 3.2 modified with a blower is going in so will have better manifolds etc and was thinking of having removable sections so i could put in for mot then take out .not worried re sensors on 3.2 as it will have completly different managment on it.

I think any car registered after 1993/4 has to have a cat unless it a diesel. Don't qoute me on the year :-\ It is around that time though :y

I think some have cut open the cats and gutted them, then resealed them. So when an inspection is carried out, it has the "cats" fitted  :-\

New MOT rules brought in from April state that if a cat is fitted as standard it has to be present at MOT time, even on a diesel.

Not correct. That rule applies to all cars given a full emissions test. A diesel ISN'T given a full emissions test so it will still pass with no cat.

If there's a lambda sensor after the cats then yes it'll bring the emissions light on. Why not go for high flow sports cats instead? 100 or 200 cell ones should keep the lambdas happy enough.

If they are before the cats and there's nothing after I can't see why you'd get the EML light on if you remove the cats then.

O2 sensors are before the cat's on a 2.5 / 3.0 so no problem.

Iirc, the v6's work better with a little back preasure so either leave along and spend your money on fitting a couple of 2.6 /3.2 manifolds  (which breath alot better) or if you have the money, a couple of sports cat's (with 2.6 /  3.2 manifolds)  :)

Check that they have not been designed for a LHD.  ;)
