woke up this morning at 1.00am to the sound of my car alarm going off, im sure ill be a hit with the neighbours but does anybody know what the problem might be? thanks in advance chaps.

could be a faulty powersounder, located under drivers side front scuttle in the engine bay.batteries in it are only designed to last 10 years.i removed mine...problem solved
-
remove it or lose the car :y

Could be a number of things. If you are near Marks DTM, he has a Tech2 that can read the alarm system and tell you what is causing it.
Although the common causes are:
Bonnet switch
Rear pane break sensor (estates)
Powersounder failing

ive just removed the powersounder, and when i put the battery back on the alarm started going off again have i done something wrong at the moment im trying to get a few jobs done before i can use the car properly to take it to someone for diagnostics

Unplug bonnet sensor
Is it an estate?
-
no its a saloon.

I'm guessing that you didn't follow the procedure for battery removal:
1. loosen nuts on battery terminals
2. switch on ignition
3. wait till warning lights go out (except oil & battery)
4. switch off again & walk briskly to the front of the car & remove negative lead from battery (you have about 20 seconds to disconnect the battery lead otherwise the alarm will sound next time you reconnect it)
