I had a routine blood test the other day which they usually phone me with the results. This time however they called to say that the Doctor would like a chat, which having had cancer was slightly perturbing..... ::)
So in I go to be greeted by a very cheerful Dr " Morning!! Nothing to worry about but your cholesterol levels are truly horrible!!! Ha Ha 7.5!!! "
Apparently 'normal' levels are about 5 !! Has anyone had higher than 7.5 and lived to tell the tale??? :)
BTW I eat a balanced diet, keep 'junk/convenience food' to a minimum, I've never smoked, not a big drinker, not particularly overweight and I try to excercise regularly. The Dr is a little puzzled and luckily dosn't want to give me statins or any crap like that, so is taking a wait and see approach, and told me to eat a balanced diet, excercise more........ ::)

Oily fish and porridge :y
Not in the same bowl :(

Some years back, when these things were first monitored ... I had a level of 8.2.. and the quacks were not concerned as the "norm" was 7 .... and a standard days food for a "living in singly" in the mess was ....
Breakfast - Full English fry up - Large, with all the trimmings
Lunch - something + chips ... it might have been ... eggs, ham, pie, sausage, burger, chicken
Dinner - Soup, Full Roast Dinner or Steak & chips, traditional pudding and custard
As dinner in the SNCO's Mess was served between 5 & 6 you were hungry later .. so supper was often fish chips and peas or a chinese takeaway .. depending which shop had the shortest queue... :)
Over the years the targets came down .. but my waistline went up !! .... a cardiac scare changed a few things .. weight is now reasonable and the level is pegged at 5.3 last couple of years. No pills just a change/control of diet .. :)
I also have one of those anti-cholesterol drinks every day .. benecol ... no idea if it actually makes a difference ... :)

I did the same thing the other month went for blood tests as not feeling to good.. A week later to see the doc. He looked thru the results on the computer all ok he said but i noticed some numbers in red. I said to him what is that all about and he said its your cholesterol it 11.3 :o OH i said that a bit hi isnt it and he said yes just cut down on your smoking and chocolate and all will be fine. Ok I said and left. I always thought that a high cholesterol was bad for you.

cholesterol alone is not something to be afraid of.. but if you eat anything to oxidise them , you are in trouble.. (thats a statement from a doctor)
as an example have you heard of trans oils (not transmission oil ;D ).. trans oils can not be found directly but if you heat the corn or sunflower oil above 40 degrees (celcius) they convert to trans oils and by digestion this oil will oxidise your cholesterol.. :(

If your doctor is that concerned he will prescribe you Statins :y

Cem, I imagine that transmission oil is far more dangerous than trans oils, if ingested. :)

Was this a sample after you fasted for 8 hours? Or a random sample? If so the best thing to do is get a fasting level done.
If that is fasting level, then you need some advice rather than just watch and wait. Lifestyle changes as you suggested are a very good start.

Yes it was a fasting test... :(
Too be honest I thought that my diet was pretty good. I have to be fairly careful what I eat, as I had about half of my colon removed 18 months ago, as part of the treatment for colo-rectal cancer. Processed foods, synthetic stuff, some sauces, etc can cause havoc!! ::)
BUT.... I do have a weakness for chocolate chip cookies, chocolate digestives, chocolate ice cream, chocolate cake, chocolate in general..... :) Looks like further adjustments are necessary! :'(
It'd be abit of a shame to get through all the cancer crap to drop dead a couple of years later from a heart attack!! :-[

sorry to hear this Tigger :(
best things for your health at the moment is to exercise until you finish your last drop of energy.. :) meanwhile you will get enough oxygene to burn and discard your oxidising agents.. also increased blood flow will carry more oxygene to your cells which kills or at least stops cancer cells..
and lots of fruit and c vitamin is your recipe..
and please stay away from all kinds of chocolate.. its the worst thing for your digestive system and liver.. ( I tell the same to myself also :-[ )
Best of luck and take care :y

thanks Entwood.. and I'm willing to jump in ;D :)
but .. on the market there are lots of chocolate varieties.. pure bitter is ok (unless you have cirrhose) but on some others many kinds of saturated oil additives are used with additional sugar .. so its not easy to pass the minefield and select ( and if you have my apetite) ;D

A few years a go when I had test done, it was about 5.3 doctor said to me very slightly high but I not at all worried as your ratio of good to bad cholesterol was one of the best she had seen. That's probably because I eat fish most days either Sardines, Herrings, Mackerel, Salmon or Tuna as I love a lunch time fish and salad sandwich. Especially with home made wholemeal bread.
My problems are high blood pressure and a glucose intolerance (pre-type 2 diabetes) getting more sleep has improved my glucose intolerance, where I used to only sleep about 4 hours or less a night, I now make sure I get at least 6 hours. ::) For my high blood pressure, I eat a very low salt diet, which has kept it at acceptable levels without tablets, but it is gradually creeping up again. If improving my fitness doesnt improve it than I'm going to back on tablets again. >:(
My ex-wife when she had a mild heart attack in her 40's and was found to have a cholesterol level of 11.5 so was put on Statins. Unfortunately this raised cholesterol levels had damaged her gall bladder (gall stones), so she had to have this removed. A bodged operation almost killed her, but that is a story for another time.

Thanks for the chocolate article Mr Entwood!! The clue is in the opening sentence.... "A little of what you fancy......"
Absent-mindedly munching a packet of chocolate chip cookies with a big mug of coffee, whilst perusing the Daily Wail, probably isn't the best idea..... :-[ :-\ ;D
By the way I don't do this every day! ::)

There's different types of cholesterol. LDL and HDL. HDL is the good stuff.
